In her captivating film, artist Alexandra Gulea knits together the life of her grandmother Maia (1905-1999) with the history of the Aromanians, a Balkan ethnic group subjected to displacement and cultural suppression during early 20th-century nationalist conflicts. Through a collage of carefully composed cinematic tableaux, archival footage, photographs, puppetry, drawings, and performative ‘re-incarnations,’ the film results in an extraordinarily layered portrait that is both deeply personal and historical. Dress emerges as one of Gulea’s central motifs. A red bridal gown with a five-meter train represents Maia's resistance to marriage customarily arranged by Aromanian women and translucent men's suits that move in the wind evoke the death by hanging of Gulea’s great-grandfather and other relatives. Elsewhere, an inherited velvet dress is seen drifting through the landscapes the Aromanians once traversed from the Black Sea to Bucharest. As Gulea notes: ‘The velvet dress is borne like a spectre. The landscapes in the film, in all their vastness and diversity, bear witness to Maia’s passage through these lands. Waters, mountains, trees – all have known her, all have absorbed her suffering.’

Spanning the late 19th century to present day, the programme examines fashion’s role as simultaneously a barrier and a connecting tissue between humans and the natural world. With over 80 titles including rare screenings and UK premieres, GROUNDED presents diverse narratives addressing ecological and geopolitical concerns while exploring imaginative spaces of poetry, comedy, beauty, joy, horror, and transgression. fashioninfilm.com

Romania, 2024, Dir. Alexandra Gulea, 90min, Romanian & Aromanian with English subtitles

When Dani and Christian, an American couple in a strained relationship, travel with friends to observe some once-in-a-lifetime midsummer celebrations in Hälsingland, Sweden, they appear to enter a natural idyll. In the pagan rituals they witness, however, fertility and regeneration are connected to grisly deaths, as the meadow they inhabit becomes the site of a living nightmare. The handmade clothing worn by the Hårga community provides a whitewashed backdrop for a painterly décor of brightly coloured flowers which pulsate and seem to breathe, while humans are drained of liveliness, some more quickly than others. The contrast between encroaching human stasis and plant aliveness reaches its height when the May Queen is crowned and dons a costume of flowers. Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite era artwork of John Everett Millais and work by Belgian symbolist Léon Frédéric, the May Queen’s dress exudes a chilling vitality in which beauty and horror become one.
USA/Sweden, 2019. Dir. Ari Aster, 147min, English.

A quiet office worker accidentally kills one of her coworkers, then proceeds to bump off a few others.
“WORKING HERE CAN BE MURDER!”
BAR TRASH celebrates our 3rd year and 10th sensational season with WE ARE TRASH!, a fan-made mixtape of cult and chaotic cinema (May to Aug 2025). This season, we're proud to bring you our largest number of BAR TRASH titles directed by women — 10 in total! — continuing with Cindy Sherman's wonderfully oddball work-place slasher, OFFICE KILLER (1997).
Cindy Sherman is an acclaimed visual artist who constantly reinterprets her own appearance through an ever-evolving series of self-portraits, often utilising imagery from B-movies and arthouse cinema as well as production techniques like prosthetics and digital manipulation.
Sherman’s only feature film to date, OFFICE KILLER, was produced by Christine Vachon and her business partner Pamela Koffler through their company, Killer Films. Vachon is the legendary lesbian closely associated with the New Queer Cinema movement and whilst OFFICE KILLER isn't explicitly queer, if you've ever felt like you didn't fit in at work, the film is definitely for you.
Besides its offbeat sense of humour, outsider identity, and a drab production aesthetic we’ve labelled ‘thrift-store-gore’, OFFICE KILLER also features three cult cinema icons; Carol Kane (PRINCESS BRIDE, ADAMS FAMILY VALUES), Molly Ringwald (PRETTY IN PINK, SPACEHUNTER), and Jeanne Tripplehorn (WATERWORLD, BASIC INSTINCT) having great fun in their roles (although Tripplehorn was reportedly less keen on all the blood and guts…).
“Sherman has said that Dorine (Carol Kane) is 'a stand-in' for herself... The most compelling similarity... is their shard interest in arranging bodies... Dorine, like Sherman, is a puppeteer, an arranger of her own [bloody] dioramas…” (Dahlia Schweitzer)
Polite notice: We are projecting OFFICE KILLER without subtitles from the best available digital source.

BAR TRASH celebrates our 3rd year and 10th sensational season with WE ARE TRASH!, a fan-made mixtape of cult and chaotic cinema (May to Aug 2025).
MYSTERY FILMS? are always popular at BAR TRASH where we only reveal the title when we press play! You wanted more of them, so this season Token Homo and friends will be unveiling 4 hidden gems.
Previous mystery reveals have included MONSTER DOG (1984), a Spanish werewolf movie staring rock icon Alice Cooper, a long-lost South Korean kaiju film, SPACE MONSTER WANGMAGWI (1967), the utterly ludicrous INVASION OF THE BLOOD FARMERS (1967), and the meat-munching mayhem of DR. BUTCHER, MD (1980), which we screened with free vomit bags…
What celluloid atrocity will Token Homo unveil this time…? All we can say is that it will be an exploitation movie linked to our season theme… but that doesn’t help much, does it?

The definitive science-horror story and the film that catapulted Hammer from a B-picture studio into the majors, The Quatermass Xperiment still retains its power to shock seven decades after its initial release, now newly remastered for the first time. When the British-American Rocket Group sends an experimental manned spacecraft into outer space they soon lose contact and it crash-lands over two days later. But, as the scientists force entry to rescue the three-man crew, they find to their horror only one astronaut and two empty space-suits.

Five stories. One shared idea: transformation.
From the quiet grief of a family letting go to the obsessive depths of friendship and the shifting identity of a man under pressure, The Crossover explores what it means to change, emotionally, physically, and across time. These films span cultures, generations, genres, and even gravity, forming an anthology that blends mystery, emotion, humour, and imagination.
Each short offers a distinct lens on that theme. A British agent confronts his own reflection during a tense manhunt. A girl pursues an impossible dream. A mother begins to float. A friend’s well-meaning support spirals into darkly comic obsession. Featuring an Oscar-nominated animation (One Small Step) and Olivia Colman in The Kármán Line, these stories are presented in collaboration between ShortsTV and CineBooth. Each film stands on its own but together they ask what we leave behind when we move forward.

2073 blends compelling archive footage and commentary with sci-fi drama in this vital cinematic warning from a dystopian future to tackle the biggest challenges endangering our present day and the existence of humanity.
It’s the year 2073 where the worst fears of modern life have been realised. Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies and militarised police roam the wrecked streets, while humans hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence. In this ingenious mixture of visionary science fiction and nonfiction, Academy Award® and BAFTA winner, Asif Kapadia (Senna, Amy) transports us to a future foreshadowed by the terrifying realities of our present. Academy Award® nominee Samantha Morton (Minority Report) plays a survivor besieged by nightmare visions of the past—a past that happens to be our present, visualised through contemporary footage interconnecting today’s global crises of authoritarianism, unchecked big tech, inequality, and our global climate crisis.
2073 is an urgent, unshakable vision of a dystopic future that could very well be our own.

In a picturesque coastal Somali village, named Paradise, a family is forced to reckon with the divergent paths taken to build a stable life in a world of drone strikes, and the extraordinary pressures of a society where you cannot always make your own choices.
Mamargade, a devoted father, is willing to do what many will not to support his family, including acting as repair-man, driver, and a grave-digger of illicit graves for anyone who pays. In the humble home he shares with his sister Araweelo and his gifted son Cigaal, Araweelo dreams of an independent life which she seems increasingly closer to achieving. Meanwhile, Cigaal’s future is arranged by his father, who is determined he will not have to make similar choices.
Mo Harawe's beautifully rendered feature debut - the first Somali film to be presented at the Cannes Film Festival - skilfully captures the life, longing, and resilience of this family and the consequences of Mamargade’s increasingly desperate decisions.
Content notices: Explores themes of death and violence, including the presence of drone strikes and distressing scenes including scenes of burial.

Presented by Cult Classic Collective the screening is followed by a panel discussion with Nick Walker. A pair of astronauts heads to Jupiter to investigate a radio signal sent from a mysterious monolith on the moon, but their tranquil trip is endangered when their on-board computer begins acting oddly. The simple plot of director Stanley Kubrick's inspired space adventure (co-scripted with noted science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke) belies the profound philosophical implications of this classic film, which inspires viewers to ask questions about the nature of advanced civilizations . . . and of human consciousness. Nearly half a century after its release, the film's groundbreaking special effects are still breathtaking, and its ending still mind-bending.

Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award®-nominated writer Alex Garland reunite for 28 Years Later, a terrifying new "auteur horror" story set in the world created by 28 Days Later. It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.

Daye is a 14-year-old albino boy from Nubia with a golden voice, who dreams of becoming a singer like his idol, Mohamed Mounir. Bullied for his unique appearance by peers, and abandoned by his father, Daye is determined to stay upbeat. When he gets the unique opportunity to audition for “The Voice”, Daye and his family embark on the perilous journey from Aswan to Cairo.
Despite, their path being fraught with challenges, including a stolen car, lost savings, fleeing from the police, and lacking any means of communication, they also receive help from unexpected quarters, including a friendly firefighter – and an inspiring encounter with Mounir himself.
This unique and often hilarious tale is a testament to the power of music, resilience, hope, and the unbreakable bond of family over adversity.

After 43 horrific days working round the clock under constant bombardment in the emergency rooms of Gaza’s Al Shifa and Al Ahli hospitals, British-Palestinian reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, emerged to find himself as a face of Palestinian resistance.
With news footage of him pale and shell-shocked reverberating around the world, he spoke of a catalogue of horrors from lacerated bodies, to amputations without anesthetics, orphaned children with no surviving family, and the deliberate targeting of medics and hospital facilities.
This was Ghassan’s sixth and most horrific Gaza “war”. Why does he do it? Where does he find the strength to face it again and again? How does it impact his family? How do they process the risks he takes? The answer lies simply in their shared passion: Palestine, a passion they articulate through their support of his perilous humanitarian work.
Filmmakers Carol Mansour and Muna Khalidi, close friends of the Abu Sittahs, share that same passion. They were waiting anxiously for Ghassan to emerge from Gaza, following a long and terrifying journey through the night, to meet him in Amman. Determined to capture his raw emotions they began filming him the moment he arrived through the door. Following him to Beirut, Amman, London, Kuwait, and Dubai, they and he explore their common State of Passion.
Premiering at the 2024 Cairo International Film Festival and awarded the Saad Eldin Wahba Award for Best Arabic Film, A State of Passion offers a deeply human perspective on the cost of survival and the ongoing fight for dignity.
Content notes: this film contains graphic footage of war including torture, injury, surgery and, views of dead bodies.

Presented in 35mm, Akira Kurosawa's final masterpiece, Ran is a reworking of Shakespeare's King Lear, set in feudal Japan. Ran tells the story of Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsya Nakadai – Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amoungst his three sons Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu – The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu - Tono monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe). When Saburo voices concerns about the wisdom of his father's plan, claiming that treachery within the family will be inevitable, Hidetora mistakes these comments for a threat and when his servant Tango comes to Saburo's defense, he banishes both of them. This allows Taro and Jiro to take the reigns of power unopposed, leading to a brutal and bloody struggle for the absolute power of the warlord. Majestic in scope, Ran is a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed, and the insatiable thirst for power.
