Fearless is a heartwarming documentary that features six women aged between 78 and 90. As young women they left their homes in the Caribbean, Ireland and South Asia to answer post WWII Britain’s call for workers.

The film uses archive film and photography to interweave pivotal moments in women’s social history with the interviewees’ memories of life in Britain. These are the moments and movements that impacted women then and now. They include the Notting Hill uprising and the fight for racial equality in housing and jobs. The immigrant workers’ rights fought for by the Grunwick factory strikers and the lengths mothers went to in order to ensure their children received a proper education.

The Now Thats What I Call Gay Cinema! Quiz will take place in Genesis Cinema’s Bar Paragon.

Bar Paragon has a mix of booth seating, smaller chairs without arm support and wider chairs with arm support as well as sofas. The seating in bar paragon will be reserved for those taking part in the quiz, but the bar will remain open to other customers for drinks orders.

Lighting in Bar Paragon is generally low level. There is a kitchen which serves hot food near the bar and the bar serves alcoholic drinks. It is immediately adjacent to Screen 1 and during busy screenings can become busy and noisy.
Bar Paragon does not have step free access. It is on the first floor of Genesis Cinema up a flight of stairs with 20 steps up. There is a landing providing a break in the middle of the staircase. The steps up are clearly marked, medium height and have a handrail on either side.

For customers unable to use the stairs, the Genesis Cinema has a stair climber (max load 150kg) which a manager will be able to operate. There is a spare chair in case you do not have your own for operating the stair climber.

Two gendered toilets are available on the first floor near the bar. The first floor Mens toilets has 3 cubicles, 5 urinals and 3 sinks. First floor Women's toilets has 6 cubicles and 6 sinks.
There is one accessible gender neutral toilet on the ground floor. This toilet has baby change facilities

Independent Candidate is an observational documentary following Fiona Lali’s and her Revolutionary Communist Party’s (RCP) 2024 parliamentary campaign in Stratford & Bow, East London. The film sets out to capture the everyday reality of grassroots politics and the determined energy of RCP’s activists. As you might expect, BAR TRASH gets regular requests to screen films from ‘The Pope of Trash’ himself, aka Baltimore legend John Waters. HAIRSPRAY (1988) opened our last season and became our second fastest selling show ever (after ROCKY HORROR!). And so here we go again!

The spectacularly foul-mouthed SERIAL MOM (1994) was an obvious choice to continue our season’s theme of kick-ass women. The indomitable Kathleen Turner stars as a suburban mom on a rampage, murdering anyone who crosses her kids and sparring memorably with Dreamland legend Mink Stole in a series of (shockingly quotable…) prank calls. Much of SERIAL MOM was shot in the suburban communities and downtown Baltimore locations Waters celebrates escaping from, and Turner’s character Beverly Sutphin was modelled on Waters’ very own mom.

Marianne (Tilda Swinton), a reclusive rock star on vocal rest, and her younger lover Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts) are enjoying a romantic summer together on the Italian island of Pantelleria. Their reverie is discourteously interrupted by the arrival of Marianne’s narcissistic ex-lover Harry (Ralph Fiennes) and his newly discovered daughter Penelope (Dakota Johnson). BAR TRASH celebrates our 3rd year and 10th sensational season with WE ARE TRASH!, a fan-made mixtape of cult and chaotic cinema (May to Aug 2025).

Criminally overlooked and critically undervalued, SPOOKIES is the best 1980s rubber-suited creature feature you’ve (probably) never head of! It’s also insanely weird and is as famous for its expertly rendered creature effects as it is for the production’s bizarre backstory.

Produced by Michael Lee – founder of notorious UK home video distributor VIPCO – SPOOKIES faltered when its original creators Brendan Faulkner and Thomas Doran were fired from the production (originally titled ‘Twisted Souls’). They were replaced by editor Eugenie Joseph who only had half a film to work with and so went on to shoot additional footage to fill in the blanks… The new footage used an entirely different cast and storyline.

Some of SPOOKIES is about a carload of idiots who find themselves seeking shelter in a spooky old mansion where they find an ouija board… The rest of SPOOKIES is (possibly…) about a boy who runs away from home and is attacked by a monstrous werecat (with a hook for a hand!). But don’t worry, the whole is far greater than the sum of these disparate body parts: “There aren't a lot of horror films so daring as to cram as many weird rubber-suited monsters into one movie.” (Meagan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting).

This gave Token Homo a great excuse to explore screen cultures of other nations with an un-proud history of exploitation cinema. Countries we are visiting this season include: Turkey (THE SWORD AND THE CLAW); Italy (DON’T TORTURE A DUCKLING); Japan (LONE WOLF AND CUB); and now India (we’ve already been to Mexico and hope to visit the Philippines soon!).

Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective at Genesis Cinema George, host of a television show focusing on literature, receives videos shot on the sly that feature his family, along with disturbing drawings that are difficult to interpret. He has no idea who has made and sent him the videos. Progressively, the contents of the videos become more personal, indicating that the sender has known George for a long time.

Armed with deceptively sweet smiles and some golf clubs, they proceed to terrorize and torture the tight-knit clan, giving them until the next day to survive.

Classic films back on the big screen in 35mm. Akira Kurosawa's final masterpiece, Ran is a reworking of Shakespeare's King Lear, set in feudal Japan.

Ran tells the story of Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsya Nakadai – Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amoungst his three sons Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu – The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu - Tono monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe).

When Saburo voices concerns about the wisdom of his father's plan, claiming that treachery within the family will be inevitable, Hidetora mistakes these comments for a threat and when his servant Tango comes to Saburo's defense, he banishes both of them. This allows Taro and Jiro to take the reigns of power unopposed, leading to a brutal and bloody struggle for the absolute power of the warlord.

Majestic in scope, Ran is a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed, and the insatiable thirst for power.

This is a special centenary edition of Sergei Eisenstein’s legendary Battleship Potemkin featuring the celebrated score by Pet Shop Boys. A fixture in the critical canon almost since its premiere, Eisenstein’s film about a 1905 naval mutiny was revolutionary in both form and content. Battleship Potemkin is renowned for its dynamic compositional strength and editing of such frame-perfect precision that it’s hard not to be swept along. First revealed at a special outdoor screening in front of an estimated 25,000 in Trafalgar Square in 2004, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe’s score, performed with the Dresdner Sinfoniker and orchestrated by Torsten Rasch, blends electronic beats with orchestral grandeur to create a contemporary cinematic experience.

Rather than depicting Dracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau’s Graf Orlok (as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulbous head and taloned claws — perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirism yet envisioned. Don’t miss out on the chance to experience this imaginative new take on an iconic horror classic!

Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Laud), a 13-year-old is constantly in trouble - justifiably or otherwise - with his parents and teachers. Drifting into truancy and petty theft, he soon finds himself at odds with still less sympathetic figures of adult authority. Shot on the streets of Paris, the film exudes an emotional authenticity born of the semi-autobiographical story, and displays real compassion as it charts a seemingly unstoppable progress towards delinquency. Great credit goes to Léaud, whose engaging but entirely uningratiating performance is a miracle of naturalism. Truffaut managed to gather many talents, on both sides of the camera, who would prove crucial to the development of the nouvelle vague. Marvellous stuff.
