As part of Queer East 2026, a cross-disciplinary festival that showcases boundary-pushing LGBTQ+ cinema, live arts, and moving image work from East and Southeast Asia and its diaspora communities.

Now restored in 4K, this first screen adaptation of Pai Hsien-Yung’s groundbreaking 1983 novel Crystal Boys tells the story of A-Qing, a high school student who is thrown out of his family home after being discovered having sex with a man. A-Qing heads to the gay cruising ground of Taipei New Park, where he finds refuge with a group of fellow queer outcasts. The film’s heady mix of dreamlike fantasy, hysterical melodrama, and glitzy nightclub scenes creates a camp, surreal mood. Yet director Yu Kan-Ping succeeds in capturing the emotional rawness of A-Qing’s experience, and from our 21st century perspective, offers a nostalgic documentation of real-life sites in Taipei’s historical cruising scene, now long gone. Stunningly shot and restored to include previously censored material, this stylistically dazzling adaptation can now be appreciated in its full, hallucinatory glory.

Set in Port-au-Prince, In Haiti is a powerful 44-minute documentary offering an intimate portrait of everyday life amid political instability and uncertainty. Through close encounters with residents navigating daily survival – and a rare, on-the-ground conversation with controversial gang leader Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier – the film explores resilience, faith, and community in a city too often reduced to headlines.

Blending observational footage with immersive imagery, In Haiti brings audiences closer to the lived realities of contemporary Haiti, foregrounding voices and perspectives rarely seen on screen.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A moderated by Carine Hejazi (Haitian Support Group), with director Tomasz Kunicki, and Haitian Chamber members Wilford Marous and Michelet Romulus.

In 2022, four Sudanese filmmakers, along with a British director-writer, began filming the lives and dreams of five very different citizens in Khartoum: Street boy Lokain (12) and his best friend Wilson (11) embark on a mission in Khartoum’s rubbish dumps to buy two beautiful shirts Khadmallah (28) a single mum and tea vendor engages her daily clientele in gossip and cardamom coffee whilst studying math to start her dream business Jawad (30) is a Sufi Rastafarian resistance volunteer who rides a motorcycle and protests for a civilian government against the military Civil servant Majdi (45) escapes office life by racing pigeons with his son.

When filming started, the Sudanese were faced with a military leadership that had brought down the previous civilian government. Soon, however, war broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, displacing over ten million people.

The filmmakers and participants escaped to East Africa but continued their innovative cinematic storytelling, combining animation, green screen reconstructions, and documentary ‘dreamscapes’ to tell their stories.

Filmed on location with donated iPhones, the four emerging Sudanese filmmakers (Anas Saeed, Rawia Al Hag, Brahim Snoopy and Timeea M. Ahmed) capture the stark realism of one of Africa's great cities as it is consumed by turmoil and war.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A.

Cult film night BAR TRASH continues our 13th sensational season — SCREAM FOR YOUR LIVES! — with John Waters’ ’scentsational’ suburban melodrama, POLYESTER (1981) including a FREE Odorama ‘scratch-n-sniff’ card for EVERY patron!

For his first studio picture, filth maestro John Waters took advantage of his biggest budget yet to allow his muse Divine to sink his teeth into a role unlike any he had played before: a depressed suburban housewife. Blessed with a keen sense of smell, and cursed with a philandering pornographer husband, a parasitic mother, and delinquent children, the long-suffering Francine Fishpaw (Divine) turns to drink before deliverance appears in the form of a hunk named Todd Tomorrow (played by ‘The Sigh Guy’ himself, homosexual heartthrob Tab Hunter). During POLYESTER, numbers will flash up on screen that correspond to numbers on your Odorama card: this is your cue to encounter one of John Waters’ signature scents developed exclusively for the film.

John Waters was a devout fan of our season’s icon, William Castle, and even ending up playing the maestro of mayhem onscreen — even though the two look nothing alike! — in Ryan Murphy’s acclaimed anthology TV series, FEUD: BETTE & JOAN (2017):

“Without a doubt, the greatest showman of our time was William Castle. King of the Gimmicks, William Castle was my idol. His films made me want to make films. I'm even jealous of his work. In fact, I wish I were William Castle… Forget Ed Wood. Forget George Romero. William Castle was the best. William Castle was God.” (John Waters, Crackpot)

The history of using smell as a gimmick is even older than the use of sound, with systems for pumping aromas around auditoriums dating back to 1916 and earlier. One of the most vivid examples was ‘Smell-O-Vision’, installed for its once and only theatrical debut with SCENT OF MYSTERY in 1960 (scents included roses, peppermint, gunpowder, bananas, and fresh sea air). In tribute to this olfactory innovation, Waters devised his own gimmick for POLYESTER: Odorama! Token Homo and Genesis Cinema are stupidly proud to confirm that EVERY patron attending this screening will receive a FREE ‘scratch-n-sniff’ card to accompany the film (just be careful about #2…).

On the first Thursday of the month, every month, the Genesis Poetry Slam is an electric night of spoken word performances. There will be laughter, there might be tears, there will definitely be rhymes and rhythms.

Whether you’re here to perform or simply to listen, you’ll be part of one of the friendliest, most supportive slam communities around. We don’t have that reputation for nothing.

The Genesis Poetry Slam has been running for over 15 years, and is London’s only three-round poetry slam. Up to 12 poets compete in a night of competitive poetry, to see who makes it to the final round and can claim the title of slam champion for the month.

Join us for another electric night of spoken word as poets battle it out for a place in our December Grand Final.

In light of The Criterion Collection adding John Singleton’s Hood Trilogy to its catalogue, The Culture Crypt magazine presents an exclusive screening of the trilogy’s romance-swept second instalment, Poetic Justice. Starring musicians Tupac Shakur and Janet Jackson at the height of their commercial ascent, the 1993 film follows a coming-of-age tale centred on young adults in their 20s grappling with grief, friendship, toxic relationships and love—all while navigating the challenges of everyday life.

To commemorate the legacy of Poetic Justice, The Culture Crypt team will host a brief introduction highlighting the film’s lasting impact as a Black romantic blockbuster and its broader influence on African American cinema and hip-hop culture.

Written and directed by Ned Caderni, Worm is a slow-burn psychological folk horror set over the course of a weekend in a remote Welsh country house, where a couple’s anniversary is unsettled by a series of emails sent from the account of a deceased ex-boyfriend. Quiet, atmospheric, and deeply unsettling, the film explores grief, memory, and the persistence of the digital afterlife.

Cult film night BAR TRASH continues our 13th sensational season — SCREAM FOR YOUR LIVES! — with a wayward sequel in a once-revered franchise, Hammer Horror’s DRACULA A.D. 1972 (1972) in a rare presentation with its original HorroRitual gimmick.

How do you bring an ageing horror franchise starring two revered actors in their most iconic roles (toe-curlingly) up to date? You set it in the modern era and give the film one of the worst (best?) taglines in horror film history: “The Count is back, with an eye for London’s hot pants… and a taste for everything!”.

Dracula (Christopher Lee) is brought back to life in modern London and preys on a group of young partygoers that includes Jessica (Stephanie Beacham), the descendant of his nemesis, Lawrence Van Helsing (Peter Cushing). This 1970s swingers’ edition of Hammer’s once-seductive DRACULA saga combines gothic horror with a more contemporary fascination for the occult and would be the penultimate pairing of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing as the vampire and his foe. Throw in Christopher Neame going completely OTT as the vampire's servant, and the result is a potent BAR TRASH cocktail of pure cinematic mayhem.

To help sell the film in the USA, Warner Bros. promoted an exclusive fan club — the COUNT DRACULA SOCIETY — in a short film before the main feature. The ‘HorroRitual’ (aka ‘The Oath’) required audiences to pledge their allegiance to promoting the film “so help me Christopher Lee” and will be revived from beyond the grave by our effervescent BAR TRASH host tonight!

At first, it seems as if feelings of sympathy are developing between the two. Forty years after the film’s original release, Anime Limited is proud to present an all-new 4K restoration of the film, supervised by director Mamoru Oshii, in cinemas nationwide for the very first time. The film is a creative collaboration between acclaimed director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), who wrote and directed the feature, and revered artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D). The film beautifully intertwines Oshii’s thematic reflections on philosophy and theolog with Amano’s distinctive ink painting style, culminating in an arrestingly beautiful hand-drawn allegorical fantasy. Mystery films — where we only reveal the title when we press play* — have become a hugely popular feature of the BAR TRASH programme since Season 4 when Sony stopped us showing THE BLOB (1988) at incredibly short notice (after we’d already sold out!). We turned the event into a mystery film night and Token Homo attempted to book a replacement at pace, accidentally giving once-lost Korean kaiju film SPACE MONSTER WANGMAGWI (1967) its long-overdue UK premiere. But what celluloid atrocity will we unveil this time?

To celebrate our 4th sensational birthday, we are resurrecting one of the 216 rarely-shown titles we have screened before but will be dressing it up for this very special occasion by reviving it’s original (and utterly insane!) release gimmick. The only other thing we can say is that you should expect birthday cake and other special treats as we will take this opportunity to applaud the brilliant audience that has held this giddy old bar show aloft for so long. Voidance follows Alana Toro in her final assessment to become an ATIC agent. Inside a simulated space station bar, she must prevent a terrorist attack before it happens. Each failed attempt allows her to restart the scenario, but with limited chances to get it right.

As Alana navigates a cast of guarded and unpredictable patrons, gaining trust proves as difficult as identifying the threat itself. With each attempt, new details emerge and assumptions shift, forcing her to rethink who she can rely on.

One way to promote your film is to base it on another, already successful one, or to copy that film entirely... The global cinematic phenomenon of low-budget ripoffs and remakes is lovingly known as ‘remakesploitation’, and is often associated with the genre film industries of Turkey, Mexico, and India, which is where we return for the Ramsay brothers' eerily familiar MAHAKAAL (1993).

See if you can guess the original American title from this film’s plot: Anita begins to have horrible nightmares where a ghastly monster with an iron glove and blades for fingers torments her in her sleep. Once awake, she finds that injuries suffered in her dreams have manifested into the physical world… It’s not long before people around her are picked off one by one by this hideously disfigured supernatural being. Can anyone — or anything — stop the carnage?

… Got it? Of course, one of the joys of any film from the Ramsay House of Horror is that the cocktail of cinematic ingredients doesn’t end there, blending more Western sci-fi and horror classics with the signature mayhem of South Asian horror: practical makeup and gore effects, musical interludes, bawdy comedy, and a Michael Jackson impersonator.

Token Homo will be serving MAHAKAAL with FREE chai and samosas in the second of two intervals, recreating the vibe of the UK’s South Asian Film Clubs of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s when audiences would dress up, socialise, eat samosas, and talk throughout the film (and sometimes back at the screen!).

The programme opens with the documentary LONGSTREET - A PHILOSOPHY IN MOTION, exploring Bruce Lee's involvement in the landmark series, followed by a screening of the original episode "THE WAY OF THE INTERCEPTING FIST."
This is followed by the premiere screening of the feature documentary BRUCE LEE: THE MAKING OF THE BIG BOSS.
The event concludes with a special presentation of THE BIG BOSS, screened from a DCP (Digital Cinema Package) of the original Mandarin version.
All screenings take place on a giant cinema screen for the ultimate big-screen experience, in a retro cinema setting inspired by the classic movie-going experience of the 1970s.
