As you might expect, BAR TRASH gets regular requests to screen films from ‘The Pope of Trash’ himself, aka Baltimore legend John Waters. HAIRSPRAY (1988) opened our last season and became our second fastest selling show ever (after ROCKY HORROR!). And so here we go again!

The spectacularly foul-mouthed SERIAL MOM (1994) was an obvious choice to continue our season’s theme of kick-ass women. The indomitable Kathleen Turner stars as a suburban mom on a rampage, murdering anyone who crosses her kids and sparring memorably with Dreamland legend Mink Stole in a series of (shockingly quotable…) prank calls. Much of SERIAL MOM was shot in the suburban communities and downtown Baltimore locations Waters celebrates escaping from, and Turner’s character Beverly Sutphin was modelled on Waters’ very own mom.

“SERIAL MOM is one of Waters’ most personal and autobiographical works. Produced by Michael Lee – founder of notorious UK home video distributor VIPCO – SPOOKIES faltered when its original creators Brendan Faulkner and Thomas Doran were fired from the production (originally titled ‘Twisted Souls’). They were replaced by editor Eugenie Joseph who only had half a film to work with and so went on to shoot additional footage to fill in the blanks… The new footage used an entirely different cast and storyline.

Some of SPOOKIES is about a carload of idiots who find themselves seeking shelter in a spooky old mansion where they find an ouija board… The rest of SPOOKIES is (possibly…) about a boy who runs away from home and is attacked by a monstrous werecat (with a hook for a hand!). But don’t worry, the whole is far greater than the sum of these disparate body parts: “There aren't a lot of horror films so daring as to cram as many weird rubber-suited monsters into one movie.” (Meagan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting).

About Sistah Space

Founded in November 2015, Sistah space is an award winning community-based non-profit initiative created to bridge the gap in domestic abuse services for African heritage women and girls. The Sistah space is a specialist charity that supports African & Caribbean heritage women affected by domestic and sexual abuse, UK wide. Founded as a response to the tragic murder of Valerie Forde and her 22-month old daughter 'baby RJ’ by Valerie’s ex-partner (and baby RJ's father) in 2014. This catastrophic event highlighted the need for an organisation to tackle domestic abuse in African heritage families and was the catalyst for the creation of Sistah space. Through their expertise in providing support around domestic & sexual abuse, Sistah space addresses the specific needs of African & Caribbean heritage survivors of abuse by tackling the intersectionality of racism and gender based violence.

One of the most common audience requests for future seasons of BAR TRASH was ‘more world cinema’. This gave Token Homo a great excuse to explore screen cultures of other nations with an un-proud history of exploitation cinema. Countries we are visiting this season include: Turkey (THE SWORD AND THE CLAW); Italy (DON’T TORTURE A DUCKLING); Japan (LONE WOLF AND CUB); and now India (we’ve already been to Mexico and hope to visit the Philippines soon!).

Ranjit S. Ruprai is creator of cult film night SUPAKINO and co-owner of new boutique blu-ray distributor, The Cloud Door, specialising in South Asian cinema. Some films you can’t resist, and Michael Mann’s self-described “Freudian fairytale on the nature of Fascism” has been appearing on our audience suggestion cards since we launched them way back in season 3 (TRASH OR TREASURE?). But don’t let Mann’s reputation as a master make you think we’ve veered to the dark side of ‘quality cinema’. THE KEEP has a production history as troubled as any we’ve ever shown at BAR TRASH!

Set in Romania during World War II, THE KEEP follows a group of Nazi soldiers who unleash a malevolent supernatural force after setting up camp in an ancient stone fortress in the Carpathian Mountains. Adapted from a novel by F. Paul Wilson, THE KEEP features a stunning score by Tangerine Dream, jaw-dropping special effects (completed after the death of supervisor Wally Veevers), and a dreamlike narrative caused, in part, by directorial indecision, extensive re-shoots, and radical re-editing by the studio to reduce the run time… Strap in for a wild ride to the dark side.

Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective at Genesis Cinema George, host of a television show focusing on literature, receives videos shot on the sly that feature his family, along with disturbing drawings that are difficult to interpret. He has no idea who has made and sent him the videos. Progressively, the contents of the videos become more personal, indicating that the sender has known George for a long time.

The Independent Horror Society return with the third edition of the 666 Short Film Challenge.

All films screened at this event were made in 66 hours and 6 minutes over the May bank holiday weekend to a brief set out by IHS. More than 140 people split across 30+ teams participated to write, shoot, edit and submit a short horror film, culminating in more than two and a half hours of independent horror made over a single weekend.

Armed with deceptively sweet smiles and some golf clubs, they proceed to terrorize and torture the tight-knit clan, giving them until the next day to survive.

Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective at Genesis Cinema An aged tailor recalls his life as the schoolteacher of a small village in Northern Germany that was struck by a series of strange events in the year leading up to WWI.

Classic films back on the big screen in 35mm. Akira Kurosawa's final masterpiece, Ran is a reworking of Shakespeare's King Lear, set in feudal Japan.

Ran tells the story of Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsya Nakadai – Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amoungst his three sons Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu – The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu - Tono monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe).

When Saburo voices concerns about the wisdom of his father's plan, claiming that treachery within the family will be inevitable, Hidetora mistakes these comments for a threat and when his servant Tango comes to Saburo's defense, he banishes both of them. This allows Taro and Jiro to take the reigns of power unopposed, leading to a brutal and bloody struggle for the absolute power of the warlord.

Majestic in scope, Ran is a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed, and the insatiable thirst for power.

When Hana falls in love, it feels like a fairy tale. She starts a family and produces two beautiful children; Yuki (Snow), a girl, and Ame (Rain), a boy. But the family harbours a secret; their father is a 'Wolf-Man', half human and half wolf, and has passed his affliction on to his children. The family try to reside discreetly in a quiet corner of the city, but their joyful life is shattered when their father passes away. Shot on the streets of Paris, the film exudes an emotional authenticity born of the semi-autobiographical story, and displays real compassion as it charts a seemingly unstoppable progress towards delinquency. Great credit goes to Léaud, whose engaging but entirely uningratiating performance is a miracle of naturalism. Truffaut managed to gather many talents, on both sides of the camera, who would prove crucial to the development of the nouvelle vague. Marvellous stuff.
