Hot on the success of THE THING WITH TWO HEADS (1972) and FOXY BROWN (1974), BAR TRASH returns to the dazzling world of Blaxploitation with one of its most sensationally strange titles: SUGAR HILL (1974).

SUGAR HILL is a moody Blaxploitation horror thriller featuring Marki Bey as pant-suited avenger Diana aka Sugar Hill. With the help of Voodoo queen Mama Maitresse (the brilliantly charismatic Zara Cully), Sugar conjures Lord of the Dead, Baron Samedi (Don Pedro Colley), and his horde of silvery-eyed zombie hitmen to execute some racist thugs responsible for murdering her lover.

The only film directed by producer Paul Maslansky (creator of the POLICE ACADEMY series), SUGAR HILL offers a "unique blend of exploitation film and Southern gothic horror" (Bloody Disgusting) and is an outlier from the post-Romero characterisation of the living dead. Here, the zombies are reanimated corpses of plantation slaves, echoing the monsters’ original screen depiction in classic horror films like I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (1943).

“SUGAR HILL has a bit of an edge… by virtue of the fact that its vengeance is given a certain historical-political dimension. After 43 horrific days working round the clock under constant bombardment in the emergency rooms of Gaza’s Al Shifa and Al Ahli hospitals, British-Palestinian reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, emerged to find himself as a face of Palestinian resistance.

With news footage of him pale and shell-shocked reverberating around the world, he spoke of a catalogue of horrors from lacerated bodies, to amputations without anesthetics, orphaned children with no surviving family, and the deliberate targeting of medics and hospital facilities.

This was Ghassan’s sixth and most horrific Gaza “war”. Why does he do it? Where does he find the strength to face it again and again? How does it impact his family? Filmmakers Carol Mansour and Muna Khalidi, close friends of the Abu Sittahs, share that same passion. They were waiting anxiously for Ghassan to emerge from Gaza, following a long and terrifying journey through the night, to meet him in Amman. Determined to capture his raw emotions they began filming him the moment he arrived through the door. Following him to Beirut, Amman, London, Kuwait, and Dubai, they and he explore their common State of Passion.

Independent Candidate is an observational documentary following Fiona Lali’s and her Revolutionary Communist Party’s (RCP) 2024 parliamentary campaign in Stratford & Bow, East London. The film sets out to capture the everyday reality of grassroots politics and the determined energy of RCP’s activists. They are running to win, but the film’s focus is the campaign more than the result, as Fiona and her comrades organise to bring their vision of radical change directly to the people.

Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Laud), a 13-year-old is constantly in trouble - justifiably or otherwise - with his parents and teachers. Drifting into truancy and petty theft, he soon finds himself at odds with still less sympathetic figures of adult authority. Shot on the streets of Paris, the film exudes an emotional authenticity born of the semi-autobiographical story, and displays real compassion as it charts a seemingly unstoppable progress towards delinquency. Great credit goes to Léaud, whose engaging but entirely uningratiating performance is a miracle of naturalism. Truffaut managed to gather many talents, on both sides of the camera, who would prove crucial to the development of the nouvelle vague. Marvellous stuff.
