1995's ‘Clockers’ is a hidden gem in Spike Lee's film catalogue. Gritty, eagle-eyed and thrilling – the Martin Scorsese-produced gem recounts the story of Strike (Mekhi Phifer), a street kid in Brooklyn caught in a tightening snare of moral conflict and systemic decay. Adapted from Richard Price's novel, the film operates as a fly-on-the-wall crime thriller, social critique and existential drama all at once. Celebrating its 30th birthday this September, ‘Clockers’ remains a cult classic with a rolodex that still cuts: a brooding score by Terence Blanchard, songs from hip-hop stars DJ Premier, Jeru the Damaja and O.C. and cinematography that bleeds urgency. Oh, and visually, the movie’s got more style than a Pinterest board.
