Running time: 91 mins

Genre:

Directed by: Roberto Gavaldón

Release Date: 03/11/2024

Starring: Ignacio López Tarso and Pina Pellicer

When hungry peasant Macario longs for just one good meal on Die de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), his wife cooks a turkey for him. Visited by three apparitions: The Devil, God and Death, After Macario selflessly agrees to share his food with Death, he is granted healing abilities in return. His new-found fortune quickly draws the attention of his village, including the feared Inquisition. Roberto Galvadón’s magical-realist drama was released at the tail-end of Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema, earning the country its first Academy Award nomination. The film has become increasingly difficult to see in the UK, especially at the cinema. Screening over Day of the Dead weekend, Macario captures the poignancy and emotion of the National Holiday - a time to reflect and reconnect. Screening as part of BEYOND: A film season exploring how the afterlife is portrayed in cinema. The afterlife is truly unknowable. There’s no one definitive answer to ‘this is what is is’ or ‘this is what is looks like’. BEYOND will examine how filmmakers and art departments go about visualising this unknowable idea, celebrating the creativity and craft required to bring the afterlife to life. Find out more about the season on Instagram at @beyond.filmseason Curated by Archie Marshall. Presented in partnership with the National Film and Television School.
