Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with its 11th sensational season — SYNTHETIC FLESH! — a tribute to more than 100 years of monster makeup FX.
Crawling up from the primordial ooze of legendary B-movie studio Full Moon comes LASERBLAST (1978). Happy go-lucky teen Billy Duncan (Kim Milford) discovers an otherworldly laser gun in the southern California desert, making him the target of a pair of aliens (rendered in gorgeous stop-motion by the late/great David Allen — THE HOWLING, DOLLS) who had recently executed its previous owner. As Billy revels in the power of the weapon, defending his girlfriend and warding off bullies, he begins to change into a dangerous, malevolent monster…
With appearances by the iconic Roddy McDowall (PLANET OF THE APES) and Keenan Wynn (KISS ME KATE), LASERBLAST sees the first on-screen appearance by quintessential screen nerd, Eddie Deezen (GREASE) and is an early career credit for legendary special makeup effects artist, Ve Neill. This is the kind of rarely-screened B-movie mayhem BAR TRASH was built for.
Featured special makeup effects artist: Ve Neill has won three Academy Awards (for BEETLEJUICE, MRS DOUBTFIRE, and ED WOOD), a Daytime Emmy Award for PEE-WEE’S PLAYHOUSE, worked on all of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films, and served as a judge on the makeup FX reality series, FACE OFF.
Polite notice: We are projecting LASERBLAST without subtitles from the best available digital source.
/// BAR TRASH is a celebration of cult and curious cinema, hosted by queer film fanatic Token Homo and friends. Films are served with themed drinks, introductions, intermissions, prize giveaways, and subtitles / captions where possible. Tickets from £3.50. Adults 18+ only. THE MARBLES is a compelling new documentary examining one of history's most controversial cultural disputes—the removal of the Parthenon Marbles—and the ongoing campaign to return them to Greece. From imperial acquisition to modern-day advocacy, this is the story of heritage, identity, and justice.
In 1801, Lord Elgin controversially removed half the Parthenon's sculptures, sparking a backlash from his contemporaries that continues today. What followed was a 200-year diplomatic battle between Greece and Britain over cultural patrimony. When respected actress and politician Melina Mercouri challenged the British Museum in 1983, she transformed the issue into an international cause that redefined how we think about cultural ownership.
This thoughtful documentary, filmed over five years starting on the 200th anniversary of Greek independence, reveals the complexities of museum ethics, cultural policy, and the competing claims surrounding ancient artefacts. From Athens to London, it’s a tale of empire, resistance, and redemption—with Scotland emerging as an unlikely hero.
The debate continues to evolve, raising fundamental questions about the rightful ownership of ancient treasures. The question isn't just about marble sculptures—it's about how we value and preserve cultural heritage in a post-colonial world.
The screening is followed by Q&A with David Wilkinson.

Shera, directed by Arun Fulara, offers a tender counterpoint: in a remote Himalayan village, 11-year-old Monu fears he’ll never see the elusive leopard that haunts his dreams as his family prepares to migrate to the city. His best friend Raju sets out to give him one last glimpse, as a parting gift.
The screening will be followed by an in-depth Q&A and audience interaction with visiting filmmaker Prataya Saha, director of Harij Weds Sajili and The Golden Cage.

The Run is set on a remote running trail in the stunning Lake Garda region of Northern Italy, where a famous fitness influencer’s morning run becomes a race for survival when she is hunted by seemingly motiveless killers. The audience must choose her next move by majority vote using glowsticks. Each decision shaping the story’s outcome in real time.
The Run is thrilling film festival audiences at Raindance London, Motelx Lisbon, Dinard Brittany and Imagine Amsterdam before taking up residence at the Genesis which is in Jack the Ripper’s backyard of Whitechapel!!
This is the third collaboration between Paul Raschid and Genesis Cinema after The Gallery in 2023 and Hello Stranger in April 2025.
The Genesis team believe that “the interactive film is not a gimmick but potentially a film movement that offers an exciting new experience for the film fan”.

Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with its 11th sensational season — SYNTHETIC FLESH! — a tribute to more than 100 years of monster makeup FX.
Following the success of last season’s screening of BHOOT BUNGLA (1965) with Ranjit S. Ruprai, Bollyhorror makes an explosive return to BAR TRASH with the Ramsay Brothers’ VEERANA (1988). The story follows Jasmin, a bloodsucking seductress who leads men to their doom after being possessed by the spirit of a witch. Unless Jasmin's family can find a way to break the curse, she'll be used in a Satanic ritual to raise the real witch from her tomb…
A kaleidoscopic dream zone full of Bava-esque lightning, gloopy monsters, and a killer synth score, this is the most extravagant production from the revered Ramsay family—India's most popular and successful horror filmmakers. VEERANA features spectacular special makeup effects by Srinivasa Roy who came to prominence amongst the Bombay film industry’s 1980s “latex men” on the rising tide of low budget horror and the demand for achieving “the right amount of ‘too much makeup’” (Kartik Nair, ‘Seeing Things’) in the era’s cinema of excess.
Token Homo presents VEERANA with 2 intervals, free chai and samosas, and an earlier than usual start time of 8pm.
Polite notice: We are projecting VEERANA in Hindi with English language subtitles from the best available digital source. The original materials show signs of significant damage in places — please approach the materials with wonder and empathy.
The centre-piece of this season, we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) with a new live improvised score by queer cabaret performer and promoter, Maxim Melton. Maxim returns to BAR TRASH after blowing us away with their haunting live score for another Lon Chaney masterpiece THE UNKNOWN (1927) on the occasion of our third birthday with Loose Willis.
Lon Chaney (1883-1930) was not just an accomplished vaudeville performer and silent screen actor, he had the ability to totally transform himself through stage makeup and physical distortion, earning him the nickname, ‘The Man of a Thousand Faces’. As Quasimodo, the bell ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, and Erik, the "phantom" of the Paris Opera House, Lon Chaney created two of the most memorably ‘monstrous’ characters in film history.
“There is not a screen performer who so illustrates the fascination for audiences of the promise and threat of metamorphosis. Why do we go to the cinema, sit in the dark before overwhelming fantasies that appear real? To share in these plastic movements, to change our own lives, and to encourage the profound spiritual notion of our flexible identity.” (David Thomson)
Polite notice: We are projecting the original 1925/78minute release of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA from the best available digital source.

Lloyd Kaufman’s THE TOXIC AVENGER (1984) stands with PINK FLAMINGOS and THE EVIL DEAD as one of the most gleefully offensive "midnight movies" of the twentieth century.
The film established Troma Entertainment’s warped modus operandi, but few people in 1984 would have imagined this “silly, sleazy, and graphically violent” (TV Guide) origin story would have launched a global franchise of sequels (3), a TV series (TOXIC CRUSADERS), a computer game (on the NES, Game Boy and Sega Mega Drive), and even a stage musical. Take this opportunity to revisit Lloyd Kaufman’s outrageous original as the splendid 2023 remake mops up at the box office.
Featured special makeup effects artist: Jennifer Aspinall is a two-time Emmy Award winner (for PAM & TOMMY and MADTV) and serial nominee for TV work including SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and WALK THE PRANK. Her early career in low-budget horror has featured at BAR TRASH before with SPOOKIES (1986) and includes another cult classic with a recent remake, STREET TRASH (1987).
Polite notice: We are projecting the 2023 Director’s Cut of THE TOXIC AVENGER with subtitles from the best available digital source. Please be warned, this film was designed to offend…
