I’m Migrant is a documentary portrait series of exiled Iraqi artists that lends its name to the festival. Created by the festival’s founder, Yamam Nabeel, it tells the stories of the cultural and personal homeland created by artists away from Iraq. These two episodes are with the Iraqi calligrapher Ghani Alani, the only student of Hashem Al-Khattat to receive the "Ijaze", which makes him part of a historic lineage of calligraphers dating back to Abbasid times, and Koutaiba Al Janabi whose films tell the stories of the suffering the Iraqi people have endured.

GIRL TRASH: CELEBRATING THE GODDESSES OF EXPLOITATION CINEMA

Next up in our GIRL TRASH journey: Stephanie Rothman’s Trojan Trash Horse, TERMINAL ISLAND (1973).

In place of the death penalty, society's most dangerous people are dumped on a remote island and left to fend for themselves – think Lord of the Flies but with double denim. Newly sentenced Carmen (Ena Hartman) arrives on the island to find that civilisation has been recreated in its most tedious form — hierarchy, patriarchy and brute force. But Carmen has other ideas...

Rothman’s bargain with the industry was simple. She would deliver the exploitation films the market demanded – but she would direct them her way. With or without her, TERMINAL ISLAND was always going to be a women-in-prison picture. What only Rothman could supply was an unexpectedly sensitive study of social dynamics between anti-social people, operating beneath the obligatory smokescreen of sex and violence.

As she later put it, "I didn't always get to choose the subjects of the film, but I did have control over the attitude toward and the treatment of the subjects. In this respect, I didn't feel compromised or constrained."

We're lucky enough to be joined by co-hosts Selina Robertson and Isabel Moir, whose brilliant Cinema of Stephanie Rothman season at the Barbican gave us all the chance to see the rarely screened films of this overlooked auteur. Join us at Genesis Cinema, Stepney Green for another electric night of spoken word as poets battle it out for a place in our December Grand Final. There will be laughter, there might be tears, there will definitely be rhymes and rhythms.

GIRL TRASH hits rock bottom (or is it actually a stepping stone to stardom?) with gutter trash gem EMPIRE OF THE ANTS. We'll be celebrating the career low-point that became a turning point for GIRL TRASH GODDESS Joan Collins.

Double dealing land developer Marilyn Fraser (Collins) has a dastardly plan – take a bunch of unsuspecting clients on a luxury boat trip, and sell them a prime beachfront paradise that's actually worthless swampland. But there's a surprise in store for the group... GIANT RADIOACTIVE ANTS.

EMPIRE OF THE ANTS represented the absolute nadir of Joan Collins' career. Her work had dried up, her agent was avoiding her calls, and she'd recently signed up for unemployment benefits. On top of that the production was a nightmare, with on-set injuries, pressure for the actors to perform stunts themselves and a 30 minute boat ride to the nearest bathroom. But Joan was the type to create her own opportunities. For months she'd been schlepping 'The Stud' – the script she'd convinced her sister Jackie to write – and it was at the EMPIRE OF THE ANTS premiere at Cannes (yes really!) that she finally found the producer who'd take it on.

Proof that sometimes you have to wade through the swamp (and fight some giant ants) to get where you're going.

EMPIRE OF THE ANTS marks a return to BAR TRASH for director and lo-fi SFX maestro Bert I. Gordon, aka "Mr B.I.G.", one of B-movie cinema’s most determined purveyors of giant monsters including THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN (1957) and THE FOOD OF THE GODS (1976).
