To celebrate our 200th BAR TRASH show, Token Homo and Zodiac Film Club are stupidly proud to present Edward D. Wood Jr’s infamously otherworldly PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1958) with added 4D special effects for a spectacular DIY celebration of alternative screen culture.

PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE is perhaps the quintessential BAR TRASH title. We first screened it back in Season 3: TRASH OR TREASURE?, our radical reclaiming of ‘The Golden Turkey Awards’ that rescued Edward D. Wood Jr. from history but crowned him ‘The Worst Director of All Time’. For many, Ed Wood’s films have become a benchmark for filmmaking ineptness with their supposedly ‘terrible’ acting, no-budget FX, and plot incredulity. But are they really that bad? As Jim Knipfel explains in his passionate defence of PLAN 9: “It was a singular, fast-paced, (intentionally) funny, crazy-assed sci fi / horror / conspiracy film driven by an eccentric and visionary man who wasn’t in it for the money, but simply because he loved making films” (Den Of Geek, 2013).

Which sounds like a perfect way to celebrate 200 shows with our amazing BAR TRASH community!

PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE gives us two GIRL TRASH GODDESSES, Angora-addicted and avowed cross-dresser Edward D. Wood Jr. who would go out in public dressed as ‘Shirley’, his female alter ego, and the sublime Vampira aka Maila Nurmi, actor and TV horror host, who wafts her way through the cardboard tombstones of PLAN 9 with unrivalled eeriness and panache.

A collaboration between filmmaker David Fedele, and a group of young refugees and asylum seekers from Sudan and South Sudan, who are living and sleeping rough on the streets of Morocco. They call themselves "Jungo" - a name traditionally given to seasonal agricultural workers from Sudan, which is now also adopted by refugees, asylum seekers and migrants on the road. This Jungo Life seeks to tell their story from the inside: unfiltered, with authenticity and without sensationalism. A story of resilience in the face of suffering.

The story of a diverse group of illegal Afghan youngsters, who have been left with no choice but to leave their homes and families behind, to flee as teenagers to a foreign country. GIRL TRASH: CELEBRATING THE GODDESSES OF EXPLOITATION CINEMA

Our season continues with SCARECROW IN A GARDEN OF CUCUMBERS (1972) where we’ll be joined by queer horror academic and professional pervert Avery McNeilly to introduce the film.

GIRL TRASH takes a walk on the light side with SCARECROW IN A GARDEN OF CUCUMBERS – a queer, countercultural fairytale with a trans actress squarely at its centre. It's a frothy melange of musical numbers, screwball comedy, surreal vaudeville, and fun facts – did YOU know that Richard Nixon was a lesbian?

GIRL TRASH GODDESS Holly Woodlawn stars in the leading role, one she chose over a supporting part in a Merchant Ivory production, opting instead for the highest pay she’d ever received: $6,500. SCARECROW was pitched as a movie with a transgender lead and a secret. Robert J. Kaplan's concept for the film was that a trans woman would be the leading lady and her “sex” would never be revealed. With a simple plot – a small-town girl, Eve, arrives in the big city and tries to find a normal roommate – and low budget, the film relies on Holly’s slap-stick comedic timing and stunning beauty to solidify its cult status.

Add cameos from Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin, and you have a film bursting with future legends. It was one of only two features directed by Kaplan (the other an X-rated JAWS spoof involving an orally fixated mermaid that just shot to the top of our watchlists), and was written by crime and YA author Sandra Scoppettone (who claimed she also directed significant amounts of the film uncredited).

Soon after its release, the film all but disappeared, made available only on low quality video transfers for decades. Its recent rediscovery and restoration by the Academy Film Archive restores its place as a jewel in the crown of queer film history – exactly the recognition Holly Woodlawn had hoped for. "I'm so sorry that Holly isn't around to know, because she was desperate to find that movie," said Scoppettone.

I’m Migrant is a documentary portrait series of exiled Iraqi artists that lends its name to the festival. Created by the festival’s founder, Yamam Nabeel, it tells the stories of the cultural and personal homeland created by artists away from Iraq. These two episodes are with the Iraqi poet Nabeel Yasin, whose voice carried the nation’s hopes and Koutaiba Al Janabi whose films tell the stories of the suffering the Iraqi people have endured.

In place of the death penalty, society's most dangerous people are dumped on a remote island and left to fend for themselves – think Lord of the Flies but with double denim. Newly sentenced Carmen (Ena Hartman) arrives on the island to find that civilisation has been recreated in its most tedious form — hierarchy, patriarchy and brute force. But Carmen has other ideas...

Rothman’s bargain with the industry was simple. She would deliver the exploitation films the market demanded – but she would direct them her way. With or without her, TERMINAL ISLAND was always going to be a women-in-prison picture. What only Rothman could supply was an unexpectedly sensitive study of social dynamics between anti-social people, operating beneath the obligatory smokescreen of sex and violence.

As she later put it, "I didn't always get to choose the subjects of the film, but I did have control over the attitude toward and the treatment of the subjects. In this respect, I didn't feel compromised or constrained."

We're lucky enough to be joined by co-hosts Selina Robertson and Isabel Moir, whose brilliant Cinema of Stephanie Rothman season at the Barbican gave us all the chance to see the rarely screened films of this overlooked auteur.
