Criminally overlooked and critically undervalued, SPOOKIES is the best 1980s rubber-suited creature feature you’ve (probably) never head of! It’s also insanely weird and is as famous for its expertly rendered creature effects as it is for the production’s bizarre backstory.

Produced by Michael Lee – founder of notorious UK home video distributor VIPCO – SPOOKIES faltered when its original creators Brendan Faulkner and Thomas Doran were fired from the production (originally titled ‘Twisted Souls’). They were replaced by editor Eugenie Joseph who only had half a film to work with and so went on to shoot additional footage to fill in the blanks… The new footage used an entirely different cast and storyline.

Some of SPOOKIES is about a carload of idiots who find themselves seeking shelter in a spooky old mansion where they find an ouija board… The rest of SPOOKIES is (possibly…) about a boy who runs away from home and is attacked by a monstrous werecat (with a hook for a hand!). But don’t worry, the whole is far greater than the sum of these disparate body parts: “There aren't a lot of horror films so daring as to cram as many weird rubber-suited monsters into one movie.” (Meagan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting).

About Sistah Space

Founded in November 2015, Sistah space is an award winning community-based non-profit initiative created to bridge the gap in domestic abuse services for African heritage women and girls. The Sistah space is a specialist charity that supports African & Caribbean heritage women affected by domestic and sexual abuse, UK wide. Founded as a response to the tragic murder of Valerie Forde and her 22-month old daughter 'baby RJ’ by Valerie’s ex-partner (and baby RJ's father) in 2014. This catastrophic event highlighted the need for an organisation to tackle domestic abuse in African heritage families and was the catalyst for the creation of Sistah space. One of the most common audience requests for future seasons of BAR TRASH was ‘more world cinema’. This gave Token Homo a great excuse to explore screen cultures of other nations with an un-proud history of exploitation cinema. Countries we are visiting this season include: Turkey (THE SWORD AND THE CLAW); Italy (DON’T TORTURE A DUCKLING); Japan (LONE WOLF AND CUB); and now India (we’ve already been to Mexico and hope to visit the Philippines soon!).

Some films you can’t resist, and Michael Mann’s self-described “Freudian fairytale on the nature of Fascism” has been appearing on our audience suggestion cards since we launched them way back in season 3 (TRASH OR TREASURE?). But don’t let Mann’s reputation as a master make you think we’ve veered to the dark side of ‘quality cinema’. THE KEEP has a production history as troubled as any we’ve ever shown at BAR TRASH!

Set in Romania during World War II, THE KEEP follows a group of Nazi soldiers who unleash a malevolent supernatural force after setting up camp in an ancient stone fortress in the Carpathian Mountains. Adapted from a novel by F. Paul Wilson, THE KEEP features a stunning score by Tangerine Dream, jaw-dropping special effects (completed after the death of supervisor Wally Veevers), and a dreamlike narrative caused, in part, by directorial indecision, extensive re-shoots, and radical re-editing by the studio to reduce the run time… Strap in for a wild ride to the dark side.

George, host of a television show focusing on literature, receives videos shot on the sly that feature his family, along with disturbing drawings that are difficult to interpret. He has no idea who has made and sent him the videos. Progressively, the contents of the videos become more personal, indicating that the sender has known George for a long time.

All films screened at this event were made in 66 hours and 6 minutes over the May bank holiday weekend to a brief set out by IHS. More than 140 people split across 30+ teams participated to write, shoot, edit and submit a short horror film, culminating in more than two and a half hours of independent horror made over a single weekend.

When Ann, husband George, and son Georgie arrive at their holiday home they are visited by a pair of polite and seemingly pleasant young men. Armed with deceptively sweet smiles and some golf clubs, they proceed to terrorize and torture the tight-knit clan, giving them until the next day to survive.

Ran tells the story of Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsya Nakadai – Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amoungst his three sons Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu – The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu - Tono monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe).

When Saburo voices concerns about the wisdom of his father's plan, claiming that treachery within the family will be inevitable, Hidetora mistakes these comments for a threat and when his servant Tango comes to Saburo's defense, he banishes both of them. This allows Taro and Jiro to take the reigns of power unopposed, leading to a brutal and bloody struggle for the absolute power of the warlord.

Majestic in scope, Ran is a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed, and the insatiable thirst for power.

Presented by Cult Classic Collective the screening is followed by a panel discussion with Nick Walker. South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook directed this violent and offbeat story of punishment and vengeance. Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is a husband and father whose reputation for womanizing is well known. One day, for reasons he doesn't understand, Oh Dae-su finds himself locked up in a prison cell, with no idea of what his crime was or whom his jailers may be. With a small television as his only link to the outside world and a daily ration of fried dumplings as his only sustenance, Oh Dae-su struggles to keep his mind and body intact, but when he learns through a news report that his wife has been killed, he begins a long and difficult project of digging an escape tunnel with a pair of chopsticks. Before he can finish -- and after 15 years behind bars -- Oh Dae-su is released, with as little explanation as when he was locked up, and he's soon given a wad of money and a cellular phone by a bum on the street. Emotionally stunted but physically strong after 15 years in jail, Oh Dae-su struggles to unravel the secret of who is responsible for locking him up, what happened to his wife and daughter, and how to best get revenge against his captors.

This is a special centenary edition of Sergei Eisenstein’s legendary Battleship Potemkin featuring the celebrated score by Pet Shop Boys. A fixture in the critical canon almost since its premiere, Eisenstein’s film about a 1905 naval mutiny was revolutionary in both form and content. Battleship Potemkin is renowned for its dynamic compositional strength and editing of such frame-perfect precision that it’s hard not to be swept along. First revealed at a special outdoor screening in front of an estimated 25,000 in Trafalgar Square in 2004, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe’s score, performed with the Dresdner Sinfoniker and orchestrated by Torsten Rasch, blends electronic beats with orchestral grandeur to create a contemporary cinematic experience.

Classic films back on the big screen in 35mm. Truffaut's superb feature debut remains an influential landmark in the history of the cinema. Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Laud), a 13-year-old is constantly in trouble - justifiably or otherwise - with his parents and teachers. Drifting into truancy and petty theft, he soon finds himself at odds with still less sympathetic figures of adult authority. Shot on the streets of Paris, the film exudes an emotional authenticity born of the semi-autobiographical story, and displays real compassion as it charts a seemingly unstoppable progress towards delinquency. Great credit goes to Léaud, whose engaging but entirely uningratiating performance is a miracle of naturalism. Truffaut managed to gather many talents, on both sides of the camera, who would prove crucial to the development of the nouvelle vague. Marvellous stuff.
