As the rain tears down on rippled metal roofs, the Cameroonian city of Douala is in the throes of preparation for the start of the new school year. The protagonist – the stoic, hardworking Mambar Pierette – is a dressmaker and as such becomes the local confidant, therapist and mother. Belgium-based director, Rosine Mbakam, uses her essayistic style to create a fictional tale of a woman facing a day of misfortune. In the francophone language Pierette is a 'couturier' but not in the way the Western world understands the term: she is sat hunched over a machine, runs her hands across fabric and slices through cloth whilst the rains threaten her livelihood and her relationships. Mbakam offers a glimpse into the lives of businesswomen working in the heart of their local communities where negotiations of time, money and expertise are complex and unregulated. From watching Pierette overcome every struggle, we begin to understand the real value of cloth.

Textile artist Allan Brown finds a way through grief by locally foraging for nettle, processing the fibres, hand-spinning and weaving them, and then cutting and sewing the coarse fabric into a dress. This seven-year project, poignantly documented through Dylan Howitt’s lens, enables Brown to find solace in the changing seasons, to slow down his mind through the repetitive and embodied nature of craftsmanship, and to ‘change something ugly and painful into something beautiful and protective.’ A labour of love, The Nettle Dress reminds us that a return to slow methods of production and reconnection to nature can be healing for both the planet and humans alike.

BAR TRASH celebrates our 3rd year and 10th sensational season with WE ARE TRASH!, a fan-made mixtape of cult and chaotic cinema (May to Aug 2025).

Richard Wenk’s comedy horror — with bite — VAMP (1986) was one of the first titles dropped in our audience suggestion box, making it the perfect way to celebrate the many wonders of our BAR TRASH community (and much of it takes place in a bar!). VAMP also mainlines one of the themes we’re celebrating throughout this season; kick-ass women in exploitation cinema.

Making a spell-binding return to BAR TRASH, Grace Jones (previously seen in CONAN THE DESTROYER) is spellbinding in another supporting role. Reported struggles with her acting resulted in almost all of Jones’ dialogue being removed, but that only adds to VAMP’s neon pink and green weirdness. When her lead vampire Katrina takes to the stage, Jones’ surreal striptease is an avant garde jaw dropper.

VAMP is superbly designed by many of Grace Jones’ own award-winning collaborators — including iconic queer artist Keith Haring — and features stunning practical FX by four-time Oscar winner Greg Cannom (THE LOST BOYS, BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA). Described by veteran critic Roger Ebert as “sort of a vampire version of AFTER HOURS”, VAMP is a bloody mess of genres, but these are cocktail ingredients we imbibe with love and affection at BAR TRASH!

Heroic earthling Flash Gordon saves the world from the nefarious Ming the Merciless in this lavish, intentionally campy adaptation of the famous sci-fi comic strip. The story is as basic as space operas get: Ming (Max von Sydow) has developed a plan to destroy the Earth, and Flash (Sam J. Jones) and his attractive companion, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are called upon to stop him. Along the way, Flash must battle Ming's goons and the temptations of a luscious space princess. Previously the basis for a more straight-faced 1930s adventure serial, Flash's story is mined here for exaggerated, cartoon humor by screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr., a central figure in the similarly campy '60s Batman television series. The simplistic plot mainly serves as an excuse for spectacular sets and cartoonish action sequences, all set to an appropriately over-the-top rock score by Queen. Certainly not a film to turn to for serious excitement, fine performances, or character development, Flash Gordon has nevertheless developed an appreciative cult of fans who admire the film's humorous approach and the detailed, colorful production design.

In her captivating film, artist Alexandra Gulea knits together the life of her grandmother Maia (1905-1999) with the history of the Aromanians, a Balkan ethnic group subjected to displacement and cultural suppression during early 20th-century nationalist conflicts. Through a collage of carefully composed cinematic tableaux, archival footage, photographs, puppetry, drawings, and performative ‘re-incarnations,’ the film results in an extraordinarily layered portrait that is both deeply personal and historical. Dress emerges as one of Gulea’s central motifs. A red bridal gown with a five-meter train represents Maia's resistance to marriage customarily arranged by Aromanian women and translucent men's suits that move in the wind evoke the death by hanging of Gulea’s great-grandfather and other relatives. Elsewhere, an inherited velvet dress is seen drifting through the landscapes the Aromanians once traversed from the Black Sea to Bucharest. As Gulea notes: ‘The velvet dress is borne like a spectre. The landscapes in the film, in all their vastness and diversity, bear witness to Maia’s passage through these lands. Waters, mountains, trees – all have known her, all have absorbed her suffering.’

When Dani and Christian, an American couple in a strained relationship, travel with friends to observe some once-in-a-lifetime midsummer celebrations in Hälsingland, Sweden, they appear to enter a natural idyll. In the pagan rituals they witness, however, fertility and regeneration are connected to grisly deaths, as the meadow they inhabit becomes the site of a living nightmare. The handmade clothing worn by the Hårga community provides a whitewashed backdrop for a painterly décor of brightly coloured flowers which pulsate and seem to breathe, while humans are drained of liveliness, some more quickly than others. The contrast between encroaching human stasis and plant aliveness reaches its height when the May Queen is crowned and dons a costume of flowers. Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite era artwork of John Everett Millais and work by Belgian symbolist Léon Frédéric, the May Queen’s dress exudes a chilling vitality in which beauty and horror become one.

Synopsis:
Haifa Street - Baghdad in 2006 is ravaged by sectarian violence. Haifa Street is the epicenter of the conflict. Ahmed gets dropped off there by a taxi on his way to his beloved Suad's home to ask for her hand for marriage, he gets shot by Salam, a sniper who's living his own personal hell on a rooftop above. Qaragh - An ex-soldier suffering from PTSD decides to visit his mother in his remote home village to find peace of mind. There, he participates in a mystical spring cleansing ritual set around a temple inside a 13th-century cemetery in the middle of the forest, where he encounters a mysterious little girl. His innocent alter-ego brings him face to face with his inner demons and sets him on a difficult path to acceptance and redemption. (19 minutes)

In a picturesque coastal Somali village, named Paradise, a family is forced to reckon with the divergent paths taken to build a stable life in a world of drone strikes, and the extraordinary pressures of a society where you cannot always make your own choices.

Mamargade, a devoted father, is willing to do what many will not to support his family, including acting as repair-man, driver, and a grave-digger of illicit graves for anyone who pays. In the humble home he shares with his sister Araweelo and his gifted son Cigaal, Araweelo dreams of an independent life which she seems increasingly closer to achieving. Meanwhile, Cigaal’s future is arranged by his father, who is determined he will not have to make similar choices.

Mo Harawe's beautifully rendered feature debut - the first Somali film to be presented at the Cannes Film Festival - skilfully captures the life, longing, and resilience of this family and the consequences of Mamargade’s increasingly desperate decisions.

A pair of astronauts heads to Jupiter to investigate a radio signal sent from a mysterious monolith on the moon, but their tranquil trip is endangered when their on-board computer begins acting oddly. The simple plot of director Stanley Kubrick's inspired space adventure (co-scripted with noted science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke) belies the profound philosophical implications of this classic film, which inspires viewers to ask questions about the nature of advanced civilizations . . . and of human consciousness. Nearly half a century after its release, the film's groundbreaking special effects are still breathtaking, and its ending still mind-bending.

Daye is a 14-year-old albino boy from Nubia with a golden voice, who dreams of becoming a singer like his idol, Mohamed Mounir. Bullied for his unique appearance by peers, and abandoned by his father, Daye is determined to stay upbeat. When he gets the unique opportunity to audition for “The Voice”, Daye and his family embark on the perilous journey from Aswan to Cairo.

Despite, their path being fraught with challenges, including a stolen car, lost savings, fleeing from the police, and lacking any means of communication, they also receive help from unexpected quarters, including a friendly firefighter – and an inspiring encounter with Mounir himself.

This unique and often hilarious tale is a testament to the power of music, resilience, hope, and the unbreakable bond of family over adversity.

After 43 horrific days working round the clock under constant bombardment in the emergency rooms of Gaza’s Al Shifa and Al Ahli hospitals, British-Palestinian reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, emerged to find himself as a face of Palestinian resistance.

With news footage of him pale and shell-shocked reverberating around the world, he spoke of a catalogue of horrors from lacerated bodies, to amputations without anesthetics, orphaned children with no surviving family, and the deliberate targeting of medics and hospital facilities.

This was Ghassan’s sixth and most horrific Gaza “war”. Why does he do it? Where does he find the strength to face it again and again? How does it impact his family? How do they process the risks he takes? The answer lies simply in their shared passion: Palestine, a passion they articulate through their support of his perilous humanitarian work.

Filmmakers Carol Mansour and Muna Khalidi, close friends of the Abu Sittahs, share that same passion. They were waiting anxiously for Ghassan to emerge from Gaza, following a long and terrifying journey through the night, to meet him in Amman. Determined to capture his raw emotions they began filming him the moment he arrived through the door. Following him to Beirut, Amman, London, Kuwait, and Dubai, they and he explore their common State of Passion.

Premiering at the 2024 Cairo International Film Festival and awarded the Saad Eldin Wahba Award for Best Arabic Film, A State of Passion offers a deeply human perspective on the cost of survival and the ongoing fight for dignity.

Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective at Genesis Cinema A series of events unfold like a chain reaction, all stemming from a minor event that brings the film's five characters together. Set in Paris, France, Anne is an actress whose boyfriend Georges photographs the war in Kosovo. Georges' brother, Jean, is looking for the entry code to Georges' apartment. These characters' lives interconnect with a Romanian immigrant and a deaf teacher.

A fleet of Martian spacecraft surrounds the world's major cities and all of humanity waits to see if the extraterrestrial visitors have, as they claim, "come in peace." U.S. President James Dale receives assurance from science professor Donald Kessler that the Martians' mission is a friendly one. But when a peaceful exchange ends in the total annihilation of the U.S. Congress, military men call for a full-scale nuclear retaliation.

Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective at Genesis Cinema George, host of a television show focusing on literature, receives videos shot on the sly that feature his family, along with disturbing drawings that are difficult to interpret. He has no idea who has made and sent him the videos. Progressively, the contents of the videos become more personal, indicating that the sender has known George for a long time.

Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective at Genesis Cinema When Ann, husband George, and son Georgie arrive at their holiday home they are visited by a pair of polite and seemingly pleasant young men. Armed with deceptively sweet smiles and some golf clubs, they proceed to terrorize and torture the tight-knit clan, giving them until the next day to survive.

Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective at Genesis Cinema An aged tailor recalls his life as the schoolteacher of a small village in Northern Germany that was struck by a series of strange events in the year leading up to WWI.

Presented in 35mm, Akira Kurosawa's final masterpiece, Ran is a reworking of Shakespeare's King Lear, set in feudal Japan.

Ran tells the story of Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsya Nakadai – Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amoungst his three sons Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu – The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu - Tono monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe).

When Saburo voices concerns about the wisdom of his father's plan, claiming that treachery within the family will be inevitable, Hidetora mistakes these comments for a threat and when his servant Tango comes to Saburo's defense, he banishes both of them. This allows Taro and Jiro to take the reigns of power unopposed, leading to a brutal and bloody struggle for the absolute power of the warlord.

Majestic in scope, Ran is a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed, and the insatiable thirst for power.
