In 1949, German writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika embark on a road trip across a Germany in ruins, from US-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar.

Tells the true story of Ramla Ali, who fled Somalia with her family as a young girl, seeking asylum in London from the civil war. As a teenager, she pursued her love of boxing, but did so secretly as she knew her family would disapprove. Ali became the first boxer, male or female, to represent Somalia at the 2020 Olympic Games and made history after winning the first ever professional female boxing match in Saudi Arabia.

A group of shoplifters take aim at a cutthroat fashion maven by stealing from her stores and reselling them at a lower price — what they call 'fashion-forward philanthropy'.

In secret conversations on the rooftops of Tel Aviv at night, the systems behind Israel's calculated mass killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza are revealed by the people who designed and operated them.

In 2006, To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen sets out to make television history. When a high stakes operation goes fatally wrong, his veneered dream of fame curdles into a nightmare of performative justice.

Censored for more than half a century, Ken Russell’s visionary masterpiece returns to the big screen fully restored in 4K and cut to Russell’s direction - the first publicly released version of the film as intended by the filmmaker. Unveiled at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, the definitive version arrives 55 years after the film’s original release. An enduring masterpiece of cinema starring Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave, Ken Russell’s The Devils is a prescient epic of obsession and corruption, and a defining work of art from seminal filmmaker Ken Russell. Inspired by the true story of 17th-century priest Urbain Grandier, accused of bewitching a convent of nuns, the film lays bare the collusion of church and state through a searing vision of religious persecution, collective hysteria and institutional corruption.

On the outskirts of a village by the sea, lives a Fisherwoman; smelly, single and perpetually ridiculed. One day, fed up with her stuffy, small-minded neighbours, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker. In an otherwise conservative town, this unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos.

After her baby brother is abducted by a murder of crows, headstrong teenager Prue McKeel launches a desperate rescue mission into the Impassable Wilderness - an enchanted forest hidden just beyond Portland, Oregon. Joined by her hapless but loyal classmate Curtis Mehlberg, Prue navigates a world of talking animals, bandits, and powerful figures driven by grief and ambition. As the pair is drawn into a conflict threatening the balance of the forest itself, Prue must discover strength and belief she never knew she possessed. If she hopes to save her brother and protect Wildwood’s fragile future, she will have to risk everything. From Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning LAIKA, Wildwood is a sweeping adventure about love, sacrifice, and the magic that reveals itself when we dare to look beyond the familiar.

Ambition, obsession, and lost love collide in a haunted West End theatre where a disfigured composer, a rising star, and a jealous rival fight for control of a mysterious musical-and the masked legacy that threatens to destroy them all. Inspired by Gaston Le Roux's The Phantom of the Opera.

"IT'S MACHINE VS MAN IN THE ULTIMATE BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE!"

In a post-apocalyptic New York, a nomad and his robot battle evil forces to liberate humanity from enslavement.

BAR TRASH continues our 14th sensational season — TRASH PLANET 3: APOCALYPSE! — with the return of former gay porn director Tim Kincaid and his ROBOT HOLOCAUST (1987).

Tim Kincaid developed his filmmaking career as a pioneering director of gay hardcore films, working under the pseudonym ‘Joe Gage’ to co-create the ‘Working Man Trilogy’ (1976-1979), setting the benchmark for adult entertainment featuring universally rugged, working class men. Subsequently veering into the mainstream, Kincaid last appeared at BAR TRASH with another of the four films he made in a flurry (1986-1987) for legendary producer Charles Band, MUTANT HUNT (1987) aka “The textbook on psychosexual mutant cyborgs” (Avery McNeilly).

On its quest to save the Earth, ROBOT HOLOCAUST features flesh-eating mutants, lots of semi-naked wrestling (can there be too much?), giant worms, a C-3PO clone, Amazonian women, and malevolent AI (sounding a little like Darth Vader…). Shot over 15 days in the abandoned Brooklyn Navy Yard, this lo-fi apocalypse is full of no-budget special effects, actors in clunky robot suits, partial nudity, wayward acting, and some very peculiar hand puppets. Savaged by the bad film bros, there’s a lot of love in Token Homo’s heart for this serving from humanity’s trash pile.

Polite notice: We are presenting ROBOT HOLOCAUST with subtitles from the best available digital source.

January 2020. A film crew reunites near Wuhan to resume the shooting of a film halted ten years earlier, only to share the unexpected challenges as cities are placed under lockdown.

With the final of Sketch Off 2026 less than 2 weeks away, this documentary follows comedian and performer Orla Ridpath as she prepares to perform as Detective Muffins, but the question of where Orla is and wants to be on her "comedy quest" keeps coming back.

'Who Is Detective Muffins?' is a one-person-crew documentary, made by independent filmmaker Matteo D'Alesio.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A and live comedy performances from Orla Ridpath, Kieran & Andy (3rd place, Sketch Off 2026), and Lady Bolognese (2nd Place, Sketch Off 2026).

On Devil's Night, the night before Halloween, rock star Eric Draven and his fiancée are brutally murdered by a notorious inner-city gang. One year later, Draven is resurrected by a portentous crow and under its watchful gaze, he sets out to avenge their deaths. Set against a rain-soaked and dilapidated industrial cityscape, Draven’s journey drags us into a brutal world of psychological torment and merciless violence.

Join Seasonal Affective Cinema for a screening of this blood-splattered cult classic. With this film, we're succumbing to the brooding and tenebrous energy that comes with autumn. The dying light and encroaching shadows create the perfect ambiance for the film's twisted themes of vengeance, loss, and redemption. As Draven discovers, the only way back to the light, is diving headfirst through the darkness.

On the first Thursday of the month, every month, the Genesis Poetry Slam is an electric night of spoken word performances. There will be laughter, there might be tears, there will definitely be rhymes and rhythms.

Whether you’re here to perform or simply to listen, you’ll be part of one of the friendliest, most supportive slam communities around. We don’t have that reputation for nothing.

The Genesis Poetry Slam has been running for over 15 years, and is London’s only three-round poetry slam. Up to 12 poets compete in a night of competitive poetry, to see who makes it to the final round and can claim the title of slam champion for the month.

Join us for another electric night of spoken word as poets battle it out for a place in our December Grand Final.

Genesis Cinema, Stepney Green
Doors 18:45 / Slam starts 19:30
Audience tickets: £1 (advance booking essential)

On the night, sink into a comfy sofa, grab a cocktail or a pie, and watch some of the finest poets bring their words to life.

Pre sign-up:
Sign up via the Eventbrite link: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/112945284141. These slots are strictly first come, first served and fill fast. If you secure a pre sign-up slot, you do not need to buy a ticket – your name will be on the door.

If you have a pre sign-up slot, please arrive by 7.00pm to keep it. Any unclaimed slots will be offered to poets on the reserve list. To keep things fair, if the slam has started and you haven’t checked in, you won’t be able to perform.

SLAM RULES

Reading from paper or phone is fine.
No hate.

And remember:
The points are not the point…
THE POINT IS THE POETRY.

Nearly one in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in our lives. David Nicholas Wilkinson is one of them, twice over.

In 2020, a colonoscopy found his bowel to be extremely healthy for a man his age. In 2023, a FIT test came back clear and, like almost everyone who takes one, he assumed that meant the all-clear. In 2024, a second colonoscopy found bowel cancer. Stage 4. He was told his tumour was 5-6 years old. What went wrong?

A FIT test looks for blood. Wilkinson’s tumour never bled. Nor do a great many others.

1 IN 2 follows Wilkinson through his own treatment, where he discovers a steep rise in bowel cancer among people far too young to be screened for it, and far too young, it seems, to be believed. Among those who tell him their stories is a bowel surgeon whose own symptoms were dismissed by her oncologist colleagues and in part by herself because she was only 44.

Bowel cancer is very insidious; it often strikes with few or no symptoms. One of the participants, an NHS nurse specialising in colonoscopies, had only one symptom: anxiety. 1 IN 2 attempts to flag up early signs, because the one thing no one wants is to end up like director David Nicholas Wilkinson, with stage 4 bowel cancer.

Released in the cinema as part of Maggie’s Cancer Centre 30th Anniversary celebrations. A significant percentage of the box office income will go directly to Maggie’s St Barts.

The screening is a tribute to Lisa Andrews-Dhapra, a bowel surgeon who trained at St Barts, where she was filmed for 1 IN 2, and died of bowel cancer in May, aged just 50.

Since October 2023, Gaza has been sealed from the world-except for one group, international doctors. While global media are barred from reporting and governments look away, doctors breach the blockade and what they find is not just a humanitarian crisis, but a calculated dismantling of life itself.

Covering the entire two years of the genocide, their firsthand accounts and visceral footage offer a rare and vital chronicle of the daily struggles of healthcare workers as they navigate bombed-out hospitals, dwindling supplies, starvation and the overwhelming influx of casualties— predominantly women and children.

A new documentary by Hazuan Hashim & Phil Maxwell, featuring among others: Lowkey, Audrey White, Ken Loach, Peter Kennard and Tony Benn.

"Terrorists" examines the history of direct action and protest leading up to recent UK legislation. The film features the Suffragettes, the 1920s Poplar Council, the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp, the Miners' Strike, the Wapping Dispute, Palestine Solidarity movements and more. Contributors include artist/cartoonist Alan Hardman, author David Rosenberg, holocaust survivor Stephen Kapos, playwright and actor Tayo Aluko, Hannah from the Global Sumud Flotilla, ex-miner John Dunn and lifelong peace activist Kevin Donellon.

Music by Lola Perrin.

Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese’s film explores grief, resistance, and the fight to preserve ancestral land in Lesotho.

Mantoa, an 80-year-old widow is preparing for her own funeral while grappling with the deaths of her husband and children. Her village faces forced resettlement due to the construction of a dam, threatening to erase her homeland and ancestral burial grounds. Confronted with this existential threat, Mantoa finds renewed purpose and becomes a symbol of resistance, mobilising her community to fight for their land and heritage.

This film will be introduced by Misa Mlambo - a South African creative producer and filmmaker based in London, working across film campaigns and their own practice as a writer and director.

This screening is curated by Meliza George as part of ‘Whose Land? Whose Lens?’ a season of works from the global south discussing the protection of land and therefore peoples through the lens of slow cinema. The season is presented with the National Film and Television’s Film Studies, Curation and Programming MA.

BAR TRASH continues our 14th sensational season — TRASH PLANET 3: APOCALYPSE! — with one of those films that sells itself on the strength of its title alone, SHARKNADO (2013). As the tagline puts it, “Enough said!”.

When a freak tornado swamps Los Angeles, thousands of man-eating sharks are sucked into the swirling vortex, terrorising the water-logged populace and flooding the city with shark-infested seawater. With nature’s deadliest killer ruling sea, land and air, a group of survivors soon realise their best chance to escape the deadly maelstrom is to find a way to destroy it themselves.

Originally streaming to a less-than stellar 1.4million people on the Syfy Channel, SHARKNADO was propelled into cult film superstardom over the next 24hrs through the power of social media. Generating 5,000 tweets a minute at the peak of its Twitter storm, social media A-listers like Wil Wheaton shared their watching experience, adding further hype to the feeding frenzy.

SHARKNADO is exactly the kind of chaos that people expect to see at BAR TRASH, but it is much more than the sum of its PlayStation 2-era CGI body parts. Energetically paced and deeply committed to its own inherent absurdity (energies lost between the title and execution by the similarly hyped SNAKES ON A PLANE), SHARKNADO retains its crown as the ultimate SyFy CGI shark battle and is the perfect film to get drunk to (just take a gulp every time someone yells ‘shark!’).

Polite notice: We are presenting SHARKNADO without subtitles from the best available digital source.

Amussu is a documentary film set in Imider, a small Amazigh community in southeastern Morocco, directed and written by Nadir Bouhmouch. In 2011, the community shut down a major water pipeline to halt the impact of Africa’s largest silver mine. The film chronicles the villagers’ eight-year peaceful resistance as they transform their protest camp into a small solar-powered village, continuing to resist through songs, poetry, theatre, weekly assemblies, and a local film festival.

BAR TRASH continues our 14th sensational season — TRASH PLANET 3: APOCALYPSE! — with a special presentation of two post-apocalyptic films made with no money and pleasingly short run times: Michael J. Murphy’s DEATH RUN (1987) and Steven Kostanski’s MANBORG (2011).

DEATH RUN aka ‘Mutant City’ dir Michael J. Murphy (1987 / UK / 73mins)

Shot entirely on home cinema format Super 8mm, DEATH RUN is a rare, bargain basement ‘maxploitation’ flick from prolific British diy filmmaker Michael J. Murphy. A young couple awake from suspended animation after a nuclear war. Captured by marauders, they are taken to Junk City where the tyrannical Messiah forces them to compete in the ‘Run’, a deadly game where participants are handcuffed to an electrified wire and forced to run its length downhill while fighting mutants barefisted.

MANBORG dir Steven Kostanski (2011 / Canada / 62mins)

A throwback to 1980s sci-fi horror action films, MANBORG is the story of a dead soldier who is reanimated as a cyborg killing machine to fight Nazi vampires in the far future. “A marvel of DIY makeup, costuming and special effects" (Toronto Star), MANBORG was made by makeup artist turned DIY filmmaker Steven Kostanski for roughly $1000 Canadian dollars with live action sequences shot in his parents’ garage and everything else thrown together in post production. Befitting our TRASH PLANET 3 season theme, costumes and props were made from recycled junk salvaged from dumpsters, and regularly needed gluing back together during filming.

Polite notice: DEATH RUN screens with subtitles. MANBORG screens without subtitles. Both films will be projected from the best available digital sources. Please approach the original lo-fi materials for these ultra-low budget films with love, wonder and empathy. There will be one intermission between the two films.
