BAR TRASH celebrates our 3rd year and 10th sensational season with WE ARE TRASH!, a fan-made mixtape of cult and chaotic cinema (May to Aug 2025).

What started with SHOGUN ASSASSIN (1980), must end with LONE WOLF AND CUB: WHITE HEAVEN IN HELL (1974).
Back in BAR TRASH Season 8 (BANNED!) Token Homo screened a number of the so-called ‘Video Nasties’ including grindhouse oddity SHOGUN ASSASSIN, queer filmmaker Robert Houston’s re-edited/dubbed compilation of the first two films in the LONE WOLF AND CUB franchise (SWORD OF VENGEANCE and BABY CART AT THE RIVER STYX, both directed by Kenji Misumi, 1972). Demand was so high, we simply had to bring the series back, and this time in its original Japanese…

LONE WOLF AND CUB: WHITE HEAVEN IN HELL is the sixth and final film in the franchise that sees former executioner Itto Ogami (Tomisaburo Wakayama) still wandering the countryside with his infant son, Daigoro (Akihiro Tomikawa), but this time their long-running feud with the Yagyu clan must come to a chilling climax. Taking a bold swerve into new territory, you don’t need to have seen the previous titles to love this one.

Series director Kenji Misumi (1—5) declined to come back for the final entry, and they had run out of stories from the original manga written by Kazuo Koike and illustrated by Goseki Kojima to adapt… “and so star Tomisaburo Wakayama decided to make the sort of wild movie he’d always wanted to: one in which Lone Wolf battles zombies and Daigoro’s baby cart zips improbably across an icy landscape on skis” (Patrick Macias). The final snowy battle scene took a month and a half to film, closing the LONE WOLF AND CUB series with a suitably jaw-dropping sense of deranged spectacle.

There’s an ignoble BAR TRASH tradition of closing our seasons with something big, loud, and well, just a bit dumb (think MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE, GODZILLA ’98, and ANACONDA) but with TURBO KID (2015) we’ll swap that ‘d’ for ‘delightful’! Written and directed by regular collaborators François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell, TURBO KID is a micro-budget post-apocalyptic superhero origin story that features enough cartoon gore to pay homage to titles like TOKYO GORE POLICE (2008) whilst also packing a huge mount of retro heart.

The Kid (Munro Chambers) makes friends in the toxic wastelands with an unlikely companion, Apple (Laurence Leboeuf), to face down a tyrannical warlord (Michael Ironside) and avenge the death of his parents. It’s rare that any film lives up to its hype, but Wired’s review of TURBO KID as “MAD MAX on a BMX” is satisfyingly accurate. Packed with action, adventure, a fabulous synth soundtrack, and gallons of very wet gore, TURBO KID is guaranteed to leave a big (stupid) grin on your face as Token Homo reveals what BAR TRASH Season 11 is all about…

One day after giving a live performance, Ichika meets a new Miku that she has never seen before. The Sound Of What’s Left is a documentary celebrating London’s precious and few remaining grassroots gig venues.

The film centres around the communities of two legendary and beloved venues, The Windmill Brixton and The George Tavern. It was made in the DIY spirit of its subject and features important conversations which highlight why grassroots venues are needed now more than ever – and yet are under threat.

Produced after the worst year on record for the UK’s grassroots music venue sector, The Sound Of What’s Left serves as both a moving tribute and a call to action to protect vital hubs of culture and community.

Charming, wistful, heartbreaking, hopeful and urgent. Palestine’s official entry to the 2025 Academy Awards, “From Ground Zero”, brings dozens of emerging Palestinian artists to the fore in an urgent cry for humanity from a people under siege.

Each film, ranging in length from 3 to 6 minutes, presents a unique perspective on the current reality in Gaza. The project, masterminded by legendary Palestinian filmmaker Rashid Masharawi and Exec Produced by Michael Moore, captures the diverse experiences of life in the Palestinian enclave, including the challenges, tragedies and moments of resilience faced by its people. Using a mix of genres including fiction, documentary, docu-fiction, animation and experimental cinema, From Ground Zero presents a rich diversity of stories that reflect the sorrow, joy and hope inherent in Gazan life.

These are only a snapshot of the stories shared. Chronicling the lives of people too often discussed in reference to numbers and refugee camps, From Ground Zero is an extraordinary time capsule, an urgent response to an ongoing catastrophe, and an artist’s call to bear witness to a crime scene. It is a reminder that despite sustained efforts to silence them - the film stricken from the 2024 Cannes lineup on political grounds after initially being accepted - the voice of the Palestinian people is louder than ever through art and film.

Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Laud), a 13-year-old is constantly in trouble - justifiably or otherwise - with his parents and teachers. Drifting into truancy and petty theft, he soon finds himself at odds with still less sympathetic figures of adult authority. Shot on the streets of Paris, the film exudes an emotional authenticity born of the semi-autobiographical story, and displays real compassion as it charts a seemingly unstoppable progress towards delinquency. Great credit goes to Léaud, whose engaging but entirely uningratiating performance is a miracle of naturalism. Truffaut managed to gather many talents, on both sides of the camera, who would prove crucial to the development of the nouvelle vague. Marvellous stuff.
