The Genesis Poetry Slam is London’s only three-round poetry slam. Hear new, fresh and personal spoken word poetry from 12 slammers, and see who is named the winner this month. It’s always a surprise what comes up, but the night remains friendly, fresh, and the BARGAIN price of £1!

This event, our November slam is the final qualifying event before the grand final in December, where you’ll get to hear from all our monthly winners of 2025!

Join us on Thursday 6th of November, upstairs at the Genesis Cinema in Whitechapel for your monthly dose of friendly competitive poetry slamming! Whether you come to share your words or just to soak them in, we’ve got a warm, welcoming crowd and electric performances every time!

If you’ve been assigned a PRE SIGN-UP slot please arrive by 7.15pm to secure it, or we will allocate it to the next person on the reserve list. To keep things fair for the other slammers, if you haven’t arrived by the time the slam has started and made yourself known to us, you won’t be able to perform.

2) If you don’t get a pre-sign up slot, we always have a few ON THE NIGHT slots, for poets who want to try their luck. These are also first, come first served, with sign up starting at 19:00. Just come to the front and make yourself known to us and we’ll take your name down!

We’re a 3-round slam, so please have 3 poems ready. Poems can be up to 3 minutes long.
No props, no costumes (reading your poem from paper or from a device is fine!) and ABSOLUTELY no hate speech. Other than that the only thing to remember is that the points are not the point.... THE POINT IS THE POETRY!

Directed by Paul Raschid, one of the leading voices in interactive filmmaking, The Run breaks new ground in horror storytelling. The film stars Roxanne McKee (Game of Thrones, Strike Back) and George Blagden (Vikings, Versailles) with cameos from Dario Argento (the master director of horror films) and Franco Nero (the Italian screen legend) in a high-stakes, immersive experience where the audience plays a pivotal role in determining the protagonist’s fate.

The Run is set on a remote running trail in the stunning Lake Garda region of Northern Italy, where a famous fitness influencer’s morning run becomes a race for survival when she is hunted by seemingly motiveless killers. The audience must choose her next move by majority vote using glowsticks. Each decision shaping the story’s outcome in real time.

The Run is thrilling film festival audiences at Raindance London, Motelx Lisbon, Dinard Brittany and Imagine Amsterdam before taking up residence at the Genesis which is in Jack the Ripper’s backyard of Whitechapel!!

This is the third collaboration between Paul Raschid and Genesis Cinema after The Gallery in 2023 and Hello Stranger in April 2025.

THE MARBLES is a compelling new documentary examining one of history's most controversial cultural disputes—the removal of the Parthenon Marbles—and the ongoing campaign to return them to Greece. From imperial acquisition to modern-day advocacy, this is the story of heritage, identity, and justice.

In 1801, Lord Elgin controversially removed half the Parthenon's sculptures, sparking a backlash from his contemporaries that continues today. ReelIn UK presents a theatrical showcase of shorts, featuring three bold, multiple award-winning short films that explore the emotional landscapes of modern India.

Anchoring the event is Harij Weds Sajili, a darkly satirical and emotionally charged film about a young bride who fakes her suicide, with the help of a sex worker, to escape a violent arranged marriage, executive produced by British Actor Nitin Ganatra and Oscar Winner Nani Sahra Walker.

Oscar Qualifying, The Golden Cage unfolds in a crumbling Kolkata mansion in 1989, where the last members of a once-affluent family grapple with the decision to sell their ancestral home.

Shera, directed by Arun Fulara, offers a tender counterpoint: in a remote Himalayan village, 11-year-old Monu fears he’ll never see the elusive leopard that haunts his dreams as his family prepares to migrate to the city. His best friend Raju sets out to give him one last glimpse, as a parting gift.

The screening will be followed by an in-depth Q&A and audience interaction with visiting filmmaker Prataya Saha, director of Harij Weds Sajili and The Golden Cage.

A Hong Kong pastor faces an impossible test of faith when the young man responsible for his daughter's death arrives at his church seeking both salvation and shelter.

The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.

Tower Hamlets Trades Council, with the Genesis Cinema, presents:

Resisting the Far Right: a season of films about the dangers of right-wing extremism.
Far-right and nationalist politics are on the rise. Immigrants and minorities are being scapegoated like they were in the 1930s.

Following the success of last season’s screening of BHOOT BUNGLA (1965) with Ranjit S. Ruprai, Bollyhorror makes an explosive return to BAR TRASH with the Ramsay Brothers’ VEERANA (1988). The story follows Jasmin, a bloodsucking seductress who leads men to their doom after being possessed by the spirit of a witch. Unless Jasmin's family can find a way to break the curse, she'll be used in a Satanic ritual to raise the real witch from her tomb…

A kaleidoscopic dream zone full of Bava-esque lightning, gloopy monsters, and a killer synth score, this is the most extravagant production from the revered Ramsay family—India's most popular and successful horror filmmakers. Students and scholars demand divestment from companies linked to Israel and call for a ceasefire in Gaza, facing waves of crackdown from administrators, the media and the police and politicians.

Filmed a decade apart, two powerful titles trace the rise of skateboarding in Palestine, from its grassroots birth under occupation to one athlete’s journey of resistance on the road to the Olympic qualifiers.

United Kingdom, 2015, Phillip Joa and Theo Krish, 27’

Filmed in 2015 primarily on phones, with zero budget, Epicly Palestine’d is a short documentary capturing the birth of Palestine’s skate scene. With no equipment, no facilities and no blueprint, a small group of teenagers make history by becoming Palestine’s first skateboarders. Despite the challenges of living under military occupation, they set out to build a community from scratch – planting the seeds for what, nearly a decade later, would lead to Palestine’s first Olympic skateboarder.

EXIST
Sweden, 2025, Markus Bengtsson and Viktor Telegin, 40’

EXIST follows Palestinian skateboarder, Aram Sabbah, in the weeks leading up to the Olympic qualifiers in Dubai. Leaving his war-torn homeland, Aram isn’t chasing medals, he’s carrying the mantle for Palestine with a drive to send a message – Palestine exists beyond media headlines and nameless statistics. Through skateboarding, Aram defines the forces that seek to silence and erase his people, offering instead resilience and a quiet resistance built on presence, passion and hope.

This session will be followed by a screen talk with Nora Lagström Jebara, Theo Krish (SkatePal) and Viktor Telegin, hosted by Manal Massalha.

Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with its 11th sensational season — SYNTHETIC FLESH! — a tribute to more than 100 years of monster makeup FX.

The centre-piece of this season, we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) with a new live improvised score by queer cabaret performer and promoter, Maxim Melton. Maxim returns to BAR TRASH after blowing us away with their haunting live score for another Lon Chaney masterpiece THE UNKNOWN (1927) on the occasion of our third birthday with Loose Willis.

Lon Chaney (1883-1930) was not just an accomplished vaudeville performer and silent screen actor, he had the ability to totally transform himself through stage makeup and physical distortion, earning him the nickname, ‘The Man of a Thousand Faces’. As Quasimodo, the bell ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, and Erik, the "phantom" of the Paris Opera House, Lon Chaney created two of the most memorably ‘monstrous’ characters in film history.

“There is not a screen performer who so illustrates the fascination for audiences of the promise and threat of metamorphosis. Filmed in the occupied West Bank in 2022, 48: Resisting the Big Settlement documents the everyday realities of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. Through interviews with men, women and children in Nabi Saleh, Hebron, Jenin, and Sheikh Jarrah, the film captures stories of land seizures, bans on free movement, checkpoints, imprisonment and killings of their loved ones. What emerges is a collective narrative of Palestinian resistance as a daily, lived practice of survival and defiance.

Where the Wind Blows

After 50 years in New York, Nassib Elias returns to his Palestinian hometown of Shefa-’Amr to revive his ancestral garden. Filmmaker Hana Elias intimately captures her family’s search for belonging as they restore the land and tend the garden using traditional agricultural methods during their first olive harvest. Over one seasonal cycle, Where the Wind Blows uncovers the nuanced social ties that bind the family to the land, showing how this connection sustains both their heritage and the survival of all living things intertwined with the soil.

Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with its 11th sensational season — SYNTHETIC FLESH! — a tribute to more than 100 years of monster makeup FX.

Lloyd Kaufman’s THE TOXIC AVENGER (1984) stands with PINK FLAMINGOS and THE EVIL DEAD as one of the most gleefully offensive "midnight movies" of the twentieth century.

The film established Troma Entertainment’s warped modus operandi, but few people in 1984 would have imagined this “silly, sleazy, and graphically violent” (TV Guide) origin story would have launched a global franchise of sequels (3), a TV series (TOXIC CRUSADERS), a computer game (on the NES, Game Boy and Sega Mega Drive), and even a stage musical. Take this opportunity to revisit Lloyd Kaufman’s outrageous original as the splendid 2023 remake mops up at the box office.

Featured special makeup effects artist: Jennifer Aspinall is a two-time Emmy Award winner (for PAM & TOMMY and MADTV) and serial nominee for TV work including SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and WALK THE PRANK. Her early career in low-budget horror has featured at BAR TRASH before with SPOOKIES (1986) and includes another cult classic with a recent remake, STREET TRASH (1987).

In a pioneering collaboration, The Run interactive film will have a 2 month residency at the Genesis Cinema, London from October 31st to December 31st

Directed by Paul Raschid, one of the leading voices in interactive filmmaking, The Run breaks new ground in horror storytelling. The film stars Roxanne McKee (Game of Thrones, Strike Back) and George Blagden (Vikings, Versailles) with cameos from Dario Argento (the master director of horror films) and Franco Nero (the Italian screen legend) in a high-stakes, immersive experience where the audience plays a pivotal role in determining the protagonist’s fate.

The Run is set on a remote running trail in the stunning Lake Garda region of Northern Italy, where a famous fitness influencer’s morning run becomes a race for survival when she is hunted by seemingly motiveless killers. The audience must choose her next move by majority vote using glowsticks. Each decision shaping the story’s outcome in real time.

The Run is thrilling film festival audiences at Raindance London, Motelx Lisbon, Dinard Brittany and Imagine Amsterdam before taking up residence at the Genesis which is in Jack the Ripper’s backyard of Whitechapel!!

Derek Vineyard is paroled after serving 3 years in prison for killing two African-American men. Through his brother, Danny Vineyard's narration, we learn that before going to prison, Derek was a skinhead and the leader of a violent white supremacist gang that committed acts of racial crime throughout L.A. and his actions greatly influenced Danny. Reformed and fresh out of prison, Derek severs contact with the gang and becomes determined to keep Danny from going down the same violent path as he did.
