Cult film night BAR TRASH continues our 13th sensational season — SCREAM FOR YOUR LIVES! — with “a new concept in motion picture technique”, psycho-thriller WICKED, WICKED (1973) in spectacular Duo-Vision!

Short-lived cinema gimmick 'Duo-Vision' promised audiences would “witness simultaneous action through the use of a double screen” offering “an experience that will challenge your imagination!”. Actually a simple split-screen technique, WICKED, WICKED’s true gimmick was that the entire film was shot from different perspectives, creating a boundary-pushing alternative to cinema’s slew of PSYCHO copycat killers.

On one half of the screen, WICKED, WICKED follows a psychotic electrician stalking the corridors of an elegant Californian hotel. Simultaneously, the other half of the screen follows the hotel guests who are unaware they’ll be checking out soon (as well as providing occasional flash-backs into various characters’ lives and backstories). Adding to all the deranged chaos, the carnage is accompanied on screen by an organist playing music from the 1925 silent classic, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.

Despite promotional posters screaming 'TWICE THE TENSION! TWICE THE TERROR!', Richard L. Bare’s film was dismissed by incredulous contemporary critics as “Half Grand Hotel and half Grand Guignol”. However, with Tiffany Bolling returning to Bar Paragon after the terrifying KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS (1977), and an extraordinary air of (unintended?) camp, WICKED, WICKED might just be your next favourite BAR TRASH title.

Aspiring adult film-maker Jon Rubin returns from a tour of Vietnam and, armed with his film camera, attempts to find meaning and inspiration in the counter-culture of New York in 1970. We are excited to announce the 666 Film Challenge Screening! This special event will feature a selection of films from the challenge in which filmmakers had 66 hours and 6 minutes to write, produce, edit and deliver a short horror film. Join us in celebrating creativity and talent in independent British horror. Alongside the screening, we'll be announcing the winners of each award category. 

One of the most acclaimed and influential Brazilian films ever made, Black God, White Devil (Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol) tells the story of Manoel, a young cowherd who murders a wealthy ranch owner and flees to the drought-ridden hinterlands of northern Brazil with his wife Rosa. Now outlawed, they join a religious cult headed by the mystic self-proclaimed saint Sabastião, who condones acts of violence. The couple are plunged into a moral dilemma between embracing religious fanaticism and a life of brutality amongst rural peasant bandits. Meanwhile, the authorities hire a gunman known as Antonio Das Mortes to track them down.

This audacious and fearless award-winning film, celebrated for its fusion of mysticism and folklore and its examination of aspects of religion, violence, and social injustice, was hugely influential in shaping the Cinema Novo movement and has inspired many filmmakers. Mawu Films is proud to present this milestone of Brazilian filmmaking in a brand new restoration of the original 35mm materials preserved by the Cinemateca Brasileira.

The original viral video; Faces of Death transcends time and format, borne of analogue home entertainment media and predating the phenomenon of Liveleak, Worldstarhiphop & rotten.com. Its pervasiveness as an idea, only whispered of in hushed tones in the backs of video stores and amongst elder brothers’ sketchy friends, is what draws TFFF to screening it; more than just a shock-documentary, it’s a cursed object. Now restored in and premiering on the big screen, Faces of Death can be scrutinised in the same clinical manner that the film itself leaps at the chance to exploit death and tragedy. Will this be a chance to finally exorcise this title’s power over audiences by dragging it into the light or are we only spreading the reality virus further?

Three friends journey from Kansas City to Los Angeles, mistakenly believing that their band is opening for Green Day on New Year’s Eve.

Token Homo and Loose Willis invite you to the closing night of the 13th sensational season of BAR TRASH — SCREAM FOR YOUR LIVES! — with what is widely regarded as one of the worst movies ever made (with one of the longest titles!), Ray Dennis Steckler’s THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES WHO STOPPED LIVING AND BECAME MIXED UP ZOMBIES!!? (1964).

Billed as ‘the first monster musical’ and made before Steckler turned 24, INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES was shot in just 11 days on a micro budget of $38,000. A lurid story with musical interludes about a series of carnival murders, INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES is “junk drawer cinema at its most impossible to close" with a “threadbare, developed-in-the-bathroom-sink aesthetic that explains the film's confounding charm" (Richard Harland Smith, Turner Classic Movies).

Steckler bought-back ownership of his film after its initial failed distribution, exhibiting it to modest success under alternative titles including ‘Diabolical Dr. Voodoo’ and ‘Teenage Psycho Meets Bloody Mary’. As well as appearing in his own films under the pseudonym ‘Cash Flagg’, Steckler toured the grindhouse circuit with his titles, often playing one of the monsters that would leap out of the darkness for this film’s original gimmick, TERRORAMA. We will be serving the film with our own cocktail of theatrical gimmicks — including some free shots! — as we bring our season to a close.

Following sold-out screenings at its Canadian theatrical premiere, the internationally award-winning Japanese-English dramedy Rules of Living comes to Genesis Cinema for its UK theatrical premiere, for one night only.

Mikuko Abe is a 49-year-old career woman and divorcée, who lives in a big house by herself after her mother was moved into hospice care. She’s stuck in an unfulfilling job, caught up in a dispassionate relationship with an elite businessman, Koichi, and frustrated at her irresponsible daughter, Chieko, who’s backpacking around the world.
In order to pay the bills, she has to take in a foreign roommate, Vincent, for three months. A man with a mysterious past who has thrown it all away, Vincent is rambling around the world, trying to discover what freedom is all about. He gets a job teaching English, and after weeks of hilarious miscommunication, the strange roommates get used to each other, and Mikuko starts to open up.

Mikuko realizes she’s been fulfilling others’ expectations her whole life, but now decides to take control of her own destiny. With Vincent’s help, she follows her dream of learning English, and begins to break away from the constraints that have been put upon her for so long.

For this never-to-be-repeated silent horror double feature, cabaret artist and trained knife thrower Maxim Melton returns to BAR TRASH to provide an improvised live score for THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI (1920). Then, esteemed stage and screen foley artist Ruth Sullivan will create live sound effects for the Buster Keaton short, THE HAUNTED HOUSE (1921) — all for £5 a ticket!

The film’s nightmarish sets and stark lighting influenced generations of filmmakers: you will have felt Dr. Caligari’s long shadow even if you haven’t actually seen the film. Experience this diabolical masterpiece with a new improvised live score by returning artist, Maxim Melton.

THE HAUNTED HOUSE is a two-reel silent short starring comic genius Buster Keaton aka “The Great Stone Face”. Written and directed by Keaton and Edward F. Cline, the film sees Keaton star as a hapless bank teller who, falsely accused of planning a robbery, takes refuge in a haunted house. Silent films were frequently presented with live music and sound effects, a theatrical gimmick we recreate with Ruth Sullivan who has more than 260 screen credits for creating practical sound effects for TV and film including THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, 28 DAYS LATER, and URCHIN.

The programme opens with the documentary LONGSTREET - A PHILOSOPHY IN MOTION, exploring Bruce Lee's involvement in the landmark series, followed by a screening of the original episode "THE WAY OF THE INTERCEPTING FIST."
This is followed by the premiere screening of the feature documentary BRUCE LEE: THE MAKING OF THE BIG BOSS.
The event concludes with a special presentation of THE BIG BOSS, screened from a DCP (Digital Cinema Package) of the original Mandarin version.
All screenings take place on a giant cinema screen for the ultimate big-screen experience, in a retro cinema setting inspired by the classic movie-going experience of the 1970s.
