Whether you’re here to perform or simply to listen, you’ll be part of one of the friendliest, most supportive slam communities around. We don’t have that reputation for nothing.

The Genesis Poetry Slam has been running for over 15 years, and is London’s only three-round poetry slam. Up to 12 poets compete in a night of competitive poetry, to see who makes it to the final round and can claim the title of slam champion for the month.

The Dog Stars is a haunting post-apocalyptic drama based on the acclaimed 2012 novel by Peter Heller, bringing one of the most beloved modern survival stories to the big screen. Directed by Ridley Scott—the legendary filmmaker behind Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator and The Martian—the film stars Jacob Elordi as Hig, a former pilot struggling to survive in the aftermath of a devastating global pandemic that has wiped out most of humanity. Living in the ruins of an abandoned airfield with only his loyal dog for company and a volatile survivalist neighbour guarding their perimeter, Hig spends his days flying a small plane over the empty American wilderness, searching for supplies and listening for any sign that other survivors might still exist. The story takes a dramatic turn when Hig picks up a mysterious radio transmission that suggests life beyond the small world he has come to know, pushing him to risk everything on a dangerous journey across a desolate and unpredictable landscape. Widely praised for its poetic storytelling and emotional depth, Heller’s novel stood out among post-apocalyptic fiction for focusing less on monsters and more on loneliness, memory and hope. With Ridley Scott’s talent for creating vast cinematic worlds and a powerful central performance from Elordi, The Dog Stars promises a moving and visually spectacular survival story about what it means to remain human when civilisation itself has disappeared.

An Indian dark comedy following Nigerian MBA student Michael Okeke as he navigates the chaotic ups and downs of living in the capital city of Delhi. From battling everyday colourism and drug-dealer stereotypes to being involved with an enigmatic “godwoman”, the film explores the complicated social dynamics of brown-on-black racism with tongue-in-cheek humour.

The screening is curated by culture journalist Shaurya Thapa and his new film screening collective Bhindi-Wire.

The film will include pre-recorded intros and Q&As with director-writer Dibakar Das Roy and lead actor Samuel Robinson.

This is followed by the premiere screening of the feature documentary BRUCE LEE: THE MAKING OF THE BIG BOSS.
The event concludes with a special presentation of THE BIG BOSS, screened from a DCP (Digital Cinema Package) of the original Mandarin version.
All screenings take place on a giant cinema screen for the ultimate big-screen experience, in a retro cinema setting inspired by the classic movie-going experience of the 1970s.

Hosted by the Bloody Mary Film Club, this screening opens with an intro from Genesis’s resident Final Girl, writer, artist and academic Mary Morgan @msmarymorgan. Her PhD, titled “I Want Revenge,” explores violent women on screen and fantasies of vengeance.

Join us for our eighth collaboration with The Love Tank legends as we follow HIV-positive queer immigrants leaving their roots behind and finding freedom and empowerment in their new life in Ireland, alongside the monumental fight of queer activists from Namibia, Sri Lanka and Barbados to overturn anti-LGBTQIA+ laws – legacy of the British Empire and Henry VIII’s power games.

Misbehaviour (2020): based on a true story of a group of Women Liberation Activists who disrupted the 1970 Miss World competition at the Royal Albert Hall.

Queer New Worlds brings together four speculative films that move through Afrofuturism, science fiction, fairytale and the supernatural to imagine queer and trans life beyond the boundaries of the present. Travesti friends confront grief in rural Brazil; a princess journeys across Black histories of resistance; two trans lovers question their relationship and origins on an unfamiliar shore; and fantasies of queer baby-making transform the body from within.

Across myth, memory and desire, these films seek new relationships to ancestry and time, asking what becomes possible when we refuse the infrastructure we have inherited and create our own.

A school commute takes a terrifying turn when a cable car's wires snap, leaving eight passengers - including six schoolboys - suspended 900 feet above a ravine in the remote Himalayan foothills of northern Pakistan. Within hours, what begins as a local emergency rapidly becomes an international spectacle as families gather below and an ambitious rescue unfolds live on television and social media. As President of the Law Society of England and Wales, Christina spearheaded a global campaign to promote women in leadership in law. She now sits on the Council of the Human Rights Institute and is actively involved supporting women’s rights.

With Lick the Star inspiring Lucila Safdie’s first collection and Marie Antoinette marking its 20th anniversary this year, the double screening is a natural fit for the special Fashion Britain series. Founded by two best friends with a shared love of going to the movies, Lucila’s Film Club celebrates films by female directors and brings their work to a wider audience.

Taiwan, 1954. The era of brutal crackdowns on political dissent known as the White Terror is at its height. When Yue (Caitlin Fang) learns her brother has been executed by the Kuomintang government, she sets out alone for Taipei to reclaim his body. On the road she narrowly escapes an abduction thanks to Kung-tao (Will Or), a foul-mouthed Cantonese rickshaw driver and war veteran with troubles of his own. He decides to help her, yet neither of them knows what Yue’s simple wish will cost.

An unlikely friendship develops between Yue and Kung-tao, but with secret police lurking around every corner, their new bond is built on thin ice. Like Hou Hsiao-hsien’s A City of Sadness, A Foggy Tale excavates this fraught chapter of Taiwanese history from a modest position, where even the smallest act of quiet defiance carries an unbearable price under state violence.

The latest release by multi-award winning filmmaker Chen Yu-hsun, the film earned 11 Golden Horse Award nominations, including a Best Leading Actor nod for Hong Kong star Will Or, and took home several wins, among them Best Narrative Film and Best Original Screenplay.

I’m still here (2024) tells the true story of a mother who fights for justice after her husband, Rubens Paiva, is taken and disappears during the military dictatorship in Brazil.

Introduction and Q&A by Sue Branford, a journalist who reported from Brazil during the worst years of the military dictatorship. She will talk briefly about the situation in Brazil at the time of Rubens Paiva's disappearance in 1971.

Featuring commentary from surviving participants, as well as other filmmakers and critics, this documentary chronicles the career of director John Boorman and the tumultuous production of his film Exorcist II: The Heretic, exploring its critical and commercial failure, how it changed the industry, and the importance of risk-taking in art.

A tender story of first love, belonging and growing up, Beautiful Thing follows neighbours Jamie and Ste as their friendship deepens into romance over the course of one long, hot summer. Alongside them are Jamie's mum Sandra and friend Leah, two women with humour, struggles and stories of their own.

Directed by Hettie Macdonald and adapted for the screen by Jonathan Harvey from his acclaimed play, Beautiful Thing transforms the familiar landscape of a council housing estate into a world alive with warmth, wit and bold primary colours, casting everyday life in a new light.

Thirty years on, it's a joy to discover, or rediscover, this much-loved but underseen film, with the music of Mama Cass beating at its heart.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Hettie Macdonald, moderated by Reclaiam The Frame's Melanie Iredale.

As final exam approach, a shocking “suicide notice” appeared in Enshan high school. It accuses the exam system of crushing students and threatens suicide on the exam day. The school is afraid of triggering more anxiety among students, and worried about its reputation. At the same time, they urgently try to identify the person. As the truth slowly unravels, it turned out to be a scandal in the education system.

As a Nairobi journalist probes a land battle entangling the local government and a powerful multinational corporation, covered wounds are revealed and family secrets are exposed. Followed by an in-person Q&A with director/protagonist Bea Wangondu

On the first Thursday of the month, every month, the Genesis Poetry Slam is an electric night of spoken word performances. There will be laughter, there might be tears, there will definitely be rhymes and rhythms.

Whether you’re here to perform or simply to listen, you’ll be part of one of the friendliest, most supportive slam communities around. We don’t have that reputation for nothing.

The Genesis Poetry Slam has been running for over 15 years, and is London’s only three-round poetry slam. Up to 12 poets compete in a night of competitive poetry, to see who makes it to the final round and can claim the title of slam champion for the month.
