JOY + DAISIES: Desire and Disobedience

Running time: 87 mins

Two young women refuse to behave, and an older woman refuses to stop desiring.

Spanning almost sixty years, we present Joy (Julieta Tetelbaum, 2023) and Daisies (Vera Chytilová, 1966) to explore the embarrassing, amusing, absurd, dark and potentially destructive desires of women.

In Daisies, two girls transform boredom and into an anarchic game, disrupting the world around them.

JOY is a journey through the mind of a 65-year-old autistic lesbian who's addicted to sugar and can't stop thinking about her ex-girlfriend from youth. She lives with her partner—a mannequin that she's built to look like her ex. The tragicomic piece delves deep into moments of intimacy, loneliness, sexuality, joy, and the desperate longing to be loved.

We want to explore the pleasures and frustrations of wanting too much, and the strange ways we try to satisfy the insatiable.

From anti authoritarian Czech new wave to a contemporary piece depicting queer identity and female sexuality, two wildly different visions of female desire come into conversation: one exploding with youthful rebellion and the other insisting that desire, fantasy and sexuality do not disappear with age
