Hot on the success of THE THING WITH TWO HEADS (1972) and FOXY BROWN (1974), BAR TRASH returns to the dazzling world of Blaxploitation with one of its most sensationally strange titles: SUGAR HILL (1974).

SUGAR HILL is a moody Blaxploitation horror thriller featuring Marki Bey as pant-suited avenger Diana aka Sugar Hill. With the help of Voodoo queen Mama Maitresse (the brilliantly charismatic Zara Cully), Sugar conjures Lord of the Dead, Baron Samedi (Don Pedro Colley), and his horde of silvery-eyed zombie hitmen to execute some racist thugs responsible for murdering her lover.

The only film directed by producer Paul Maslansky (creator of the POLICE ACADEMY series), SUGAR HILL offers a "unique blend of exploitation film and Southern gothic horror" (Bloody Disgusting) and is an outlier from the post-Romero characterisation of the living dead. Here, the zombies are reanimated corpses of plantation slaves, echoing the monsters’ original screen depiction in classic horror films like I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (1943).

“SUGAR HILL has a bit of an edge… by virtue of the fact that its vengeance is given a certain historical-political dimension. Morgan’s gang, represented throughout as the arm of white exploitation and racism, is obliterated by the corpses of Black slaves in a dream of apocalypse.” (Monthly Film Bulletin)

Daye is a 14-year-old albino boy from Nubia with a golden voice, who dreams of becoming a singer like his idol, Mohamed Mounir. Bullied for his unique appearance by peers, and abandoned by his father, Daye is determined to stay upbeat. When he gets the unique opportunity to audition for “The Voice”, Daye and his family embark on the perilous journey from Aswan to Cairo.

Despite, their path being fraught with challenges, including a stolen car, lost savings, fleeing from the police, and lacking any means of communication, they also receive help from unexpected quarters, including a friendly firefighter – and an inspiring encounter with Mounir himself.

After 43 horrific days working round the clock under constant bombardment in the emergency rooms of Gaza’s Al Shifa and Al Ahli hospitals, British-Palestinian reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, emerged to find himself as a face of Palestinian resistance.

With news footage of him pale and shell-shocked reverberating around the world, he spoke of a catalogue of horrors from lacerated bodies, to amputations without anesthetics, orphaned children with no surviving family, and the deliberate targeting of medics and hospital facilities.

This was Ghassan’s sixth and most horrific Gaza “war”. Why does he do it? Where does he find the strength to face it again and again? How does it impact his family? How do they process the risks he takes? The answer lies simply in their shared passion: Palestine, a passion they articulate through their support of his perilous humanitarian work.

Filmmakers Carol Mansour and Muna Khalidi, close friends of the Abu Sittahs, share that same passion. They were waiting anxiously for Ghassan to emerge from Gaza, following a long and terrifying journey through the night, to meet him in Amman. Determined to capture his raw emotions they began filming him the moment he arrived through the door. Following him to Beirut, Amman, London, Kuwait, and Dubai, they and he explore their common State of Passion.

Premiering at the 2024 Cairo International Film Festival and awarded the Saad Eldin Wahba Award for Best Arabic Film, A State of Passion offers a deeply human perspective on the cost of survival and the ongoing fight for dignity.

Conceived when filmmaker Emily Hagins was 12 and released when she was 15, PATHOGEN is one of the most accomplished horror movies ever made by a person before they could legally drive a car. With an impressive devotion to editing and storytelling, PATHOGEN delivers eyeball gouging, decapitations, and knife fights, along with an endearing perspective that could only originate from an Austin teenager. “PATHOGEN is as awkward and unsure as junior high itself, but it’s driven by wonder, sincerity, and a surprisingly cohesive style” (Bleeding Skull).

17-year-old suburban Buenos Aires filmmakers Pablo Parés and Hernán Sáez pooled $450 to co-write, produce, direct and star in a shot-on-VHS zombie epic of such flesh-ripping, gore-spewing greatness that it instantly drew global cult acclaim. Over the next 20 years, Parés, Sáez and their friends would create two increasingly ambitious, and equally brilliant, viscera-soaked sequels, and several short films. A gym-obsessed serial killer murders and eats a local drug dealer for their protein, inadvertently sparking a brutal and bloodthirsty tit-for-tat turf war between rival drug gangs. Based on his 2014 short film of the same name, PROTEIN is the feature film debut of award-winning commercials/music video director Tony Burke and offers a compelling blend of blackly-comic small-town crime thriller, nuanced character drama and grisly cannibal horror. The film premiered to rave reviews and an incredibly enthusiastic audience reaction at London’s FrightFest 2024.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director/co-writer Tony Burke and actor/producer Craig Russell. 

PROTEIN contains a sequence of flashing lights which might affect customers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.

Fearless is a heartwarming documentary that features six women aged between 78 and 90. As young women they left their homes in the Caribbean, Ireland and South Asia to answer post WWII Britain’s call for workers.

The film uses archive film and photography to interweave pivotal moments in women’s social history with the interviewees’ memories of life in Britain. These are the moments and movements that impacted women then and now. They include the Notting Hill uprising and the fight for racial equality in housing and jobs. The immigrant workers’ rights fought for by the Grunwick factory strikers and the lengths mothers went to in order to ensure their children received a proper education.

Today, these fearless women are almost invisible to modern society, but as the film shows, they are still vibrant, engaging and full of mischievous fun.

Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective at Genesis Cinema Two psychotic young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic "games" with one another for their own amusement.

Independent Candidate is an observational documentary following Fiona Lali’s and her Revolutionary Communist Party’s (RCP) 2024 parliamentary campaign in Stratford & Bow, East London. The film sets out to capture the everyday reality of grassroots politics and the determined energy of RCP’s activists. They are running to win, but the film’s focus is the campaign more than the result, as Fiona and her comrades organise to bring their vision of radical change directly to the people.

Set in Paris, France, Anne is an actress whose boyfriend Georges photographs the war in Kosovo. Georges' brother, Jean, is looking for the entry code to Georges' apartment. These characters' lives interconnect with a Romanian immigrant and a deaf teacher.

Armed with deceptively sweet smiles and some golf clubs, they proceed to terrorize and torture the tight-knit clan, giving them until the next day to survive.

Classic films back on the big screen in 35mm. Akira Kurosawa's final masterpiece, Ran is a reworking of Shakespeare's King Lear, set in feudal Japan.

Ran tells the story of Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsya Nakadai – Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amoungst his three sons Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu – The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu - Tono monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe).

When Saburo voices concerns about the wisdom of his father's plan, claiming that treachery within the family will be inevitable, Hidetora mistakes these comments for a threat and when his servant Tango comes to Saburo's defense, he banishes both of them. This allows Taro and Jiro to take the reigns of power unopposed, leading to a brutal and bloody struggle for the absolute power of the warlord.

Shot on the streets of Paris, the film exudes an emotional authenticity born of the semi-autobiographical story, and displays real compassion as it charts a seemingly unstoppable progress towards delinquency. Great credit goes to Léaud, whose engaging but entirely uningratiating performance is a miracle of naturalism. Truffaut managed to gather many talents, on both sides of the camera, who would prove crucial to the development of the nouvelle vague. Marvellous stuff.
