Despite the challenges of living under military occupation, they set out to build a community from scratch – planting the seeds for what, nearly a decade later, would lead to Palestine’s first Olympic skateboarder.

Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with its 11th sensational season — SYNTHETIC FLESH! — a tribute to more than 100 years of monster makeup FX.

The centre-piece of this season, we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) with a new live improvised score by queer cabaret performer and promoter, Maxim Melton. Maxim returns to BAR TRASH after blowing us away with their haunting live score for another Lon Chaney masterpiece THE UNKNOWN (1927) on the occasion of our third birthday with Loose Willis.

Lon Chaney (1883-1930) was not just an accomplished vaudeville performer and silent screen actor, he had the ability to totally transform himself through stage makeup and physical distortion, earning him the nickname, ‘The Man of a Thousand Faces’. As Quasimodo, the bell ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, and Erik, the "phantom" of the Paris Opera House, Lon Chaney created two of the most memorably ‘monstrous’ characters in film history.

Lloyd Kaufman’s THE TOXIC AVENGER (1984) stands with PINK FLAMINGOS and THE EVIL DEAD as one of the most gleefully offensive "midnight movies" of the twentieth century.

The film established Troma Entertainment’s warped modus operandi, but few people in 1984 would have imagined this “silly, sleazy, and graphically violent” (TV Guide) origin story would have launched a global franchise of sequels (3), a TV series (TOXIC CRUSADERS), a computer game (on the NES, Game Boy and Sega Mega Drive), and even a stage musical. Take this opportunity to revisit Lloyd Kaufman’s outrageous original as the splendid 2023 remake mops up at the box office.

Featured special makeup effects artist: Jennifer Aspinall is a two-time Emmy Award winner (for PAM & TOMMY and MADTV) and serial nominee for TV work including SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and WALK THE PRANK. The Run is set on a remote running trail in the stunning Lake Garda region of Northern Italy, where a famous fitness influencer’s morning run becomes a race for survival when she is hunted by seemingly motiveless killers. The audience must choose her next move by majority vote using glowsticks. Each decision shaping the story’s outcome in real time.

On 1st November 2024, THE CURE's widely acclaimed Grammy-nominated album 'SONGS OF A LOST WORLD' was released. The night of the album's unveiling, The Cure performed the record in full for the first and only time at London’s Troxy in front of 3,000 fans. The night of the album's unveiling, The Cure performed the record in full for the first and only time at London’s Troxy in front of 3,000 fans. Far-right and nationalist politics are on the rise. Immigrants and minorities are being scapegoated like they were in the 1930s.
Tower Hamlets has a rich tradition of opposing racism and intolerance, from the Battle of Cable Street in 1936, to more recent community opposition to far-right extremism.
This season presents different cinematic representations of how bigotry can play out in society.

Sam, a young film student, discovers a USB detailing the life and career of forgotten Italian horror director Saturnino Barresi. As she begins to investigate his mysterious disappearance, Sam finds herself pulled into a violent conspiracy eerily similar to those of the films she adores.

A special screening of MOTHERBOARD in partnership with the charity BREAST CANCER NOW. Followed by a Q&A with director, Victoria Mapplebeck, Sally Kum (Associate Director, Nursing and Health Information, Breast Cancer Now) and Caroline Leek (Director, Fruit Fly Collective) At the age of 38, Victoria Mapplebeck found herself single, pregnant and broke. Unable to combine motherhood with freelance directing, she was forced to abandon her career in TV, instead turning the camera on herself and her son, Jim. Filmed over 20 years, Victoria has recorded hundreds of hours of footage, capturing each twist and turn in Jim’s life, from the thumbs-up he gave her during her first pregnancy scan to his first day at college. MOTHERBOARD is a unique self-portrait charting the real-life comedy and roller coaster of solo parenting. Victoria captures a life where both she and Jim survive her breast cancer diagnosis, two generations of absent fathers and Jim’s rollercoaster teen years with a gallows sense of humour and an irrepressible ability to turn lemons into lemonade. The film navigates the trials and traumas of unromanticized parenting, where chaos rules. We’re privy to the monumental bust ups when tempers fray and doors slam, as well as the pair’s closeness and camaraderie as Jim turns into a fiercely opinionated and funny young adult who suddenly towers over his mum. 's alt-rock masterpieces Monster (1994) and New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996). In this sublime comedy teetering between reality and illusion, Buster Keaton stars as a film projectionist who dreams of becoming a detective. He uses his limited skills when he is framed by a rival for stealing his girlfriend’s father’s pocket watch.
